JUNE 2006 NEWSLETTER

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE CLUB DAY IS THE SECOND SATURDAY OF EACH MONTH
U

Due to a very big work load Leslie Liebenberg has asked to be released from doing the newsletter . I know that I will not be able to get anywhere near the standard set by her . Any ideas from club members regarding the newsletter's news, with stories , queries , club afternoon ideas etc, will be most welcome.

THE CLUB HAS TWO NEW MEMBERS . RICHARD & VAL SPEARMAN . VAL ATTENDED THE KAKAMAS GEMBOREE AS A GUEST OF MARY NEETHLING , AND THERE IS NO BETTER PROMOTER OF OUR HOBBY THAN MARY . ON THEIR FIRST VISIT TO OUR CLUB RICHARD ASKED US TO IDENTIFYA CHUNK OF ROCK THAT HE HAD ACQUIRED MANY YEARS AGO . EVERYONE THAT WAS AT THE CLUB STUDIED THE ROCK AND NOBODY WAS SURE OF THE TYPE OF ROCK THEY WERE HOLDING . EVEN WHEN A SLICE WAS CUT OFF THE ROCK THERE WAS STILL DOUBT . HOPEFULLY WE WILL GET IT IDENTIFIED BY OUR EXPERT IN DURBAN SOON . WELCOME TO OUR CLUB VAL AND RICHARD , I HOPE YOU WILL ENJOY YOUR TIME WITH US .

The trip to the Calcite quarry was a great success , even though the date was changed . The day was cool and the Calcite was as varied as usual . We collected many beautiful specimens , the new members really had a ball . A big thank you to Mary Neethling for once again giving up much of her valuable spare time . The trip to Ngubevu to collect Gypsum { Desert Rose } was also on a very cool day , which in this area was a blessing in disguise . The area had obviously had good rains because the Gypsum was nicely exposed . Beautiful specimens were found . We also found the seam of quartz that apparently has Gold inside , a future trip to investigate the find in more detail will be discussed in the near future. The trip to Jozini was attended by 7 of our members , 1 from the Natal mineral and Gem Society , 4 from Witwatersrand Gem and Mineral Club , 6 from Pretoria Gem and Mineral Club . The weekend

went off very well , with lots of great specimens collected . There were minor hiccups when 2 local people interfered with our outings but this did not affect the day out too negatively . Some of specimens were very beautiful . There were a number of first time '' trippers '' and they certainly were pleased with what they got . The next trip into the bush is on the 16 / 07 / 2006 [a Sunday] where we will collect Calcite , Unakite , and Garnets . There is also a trip to a quarry in Richards Bay in the near future , to collect Prenite. Details will be made known soon .

OUR CLUBS ARE NOW GOING TO BE EXPOSED TO THE WORLD THANKS TO TECHNOLOGY , REMEMBER WE ARE ON THE '' WEB '' SO ANY CONTRIBUTION YOU ADD TO THE NEWSLETTER WILL BE READ ALL AROUND THE WORLD .

VERY SOON INFORMATION REGARDING THE NEW RULES FOR FACETTING AND CABBING WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE. PLEASE SUPPORT THE LATEST DRIVE TO GET A NATIONAL COMPETITION UP AND RUNNING. THE AIM IS TO GET THE STANDARD OF YOUR WORK TO IMPROVE WITH POSITIVE JUDGING AND CONSTANT FEEDBACK.

THERE WAS A GOOD TURN OUT BY MEMBERS AT THE CLUB AFTERNOON , THE WORKSHOP WAS IN FULL SWING , THIS IS SO GOOD TO HEAR THAT THE EFFORT PUT IN BY ABE , LESLIE AND JOHN IS BEING WELL USED BY MEMBERS . THE OTHER PEOPLE THAT HELP OUT AS WELL , YOUR EFFORT IS APPRECIATED . PLEASE ALSO USE OUR NEWSLETTER TO SELL OR SWOP MACHINARY AND SPECIMENS . THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE IS FOR SALE . MOST TIMES NYTHING ADVERTISED IN THE NEWSLETTER IS SOLD VERY QUICKLY .

Agate is a fine grained variegated chalcedony [a member of the quartz family] . They are generally formed by water seeping into the cavities in volcanic rocks and depositing mineral salts in layers which over the centuries have hardened into coloured bands of chalcedony. It is said to be the eighth stone on the breastplate of the high priest. It was used for many varied cures ie [insomnia and stress]. It is the zodiac gem for Gemini [21 May --21 June]. The trip to Jozini is blessed with most varieties of Agate , we managed to collect most of the common variants . Regards,
