SABINA POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME

1.

INTRODUCTION

The SABINA network has been awarded funding under the Carnegie-IAS Regional Initiative in Science and Education (RISE). SABINA partners include the University of Malawi, University of Dar es Salaam, University of Namibia, University of Pretoria, University of the Witwatersrand, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Tea Research Foundation (Central Africa).
SABINA now calls for applications for a Post-doctoral Fellowship to support faculty members in the network to build up their research group ($16 000 per annum). The Post-doctoral award will be made on a competitive basis subject to the availability of funds. Research leaders who are supervising or co-supervising students in the network are encouraged to submit a proposal in order to obtain a Post-doctoral Fellowship grant, for which a suitable candidate for the Fellowship has been identified. 2. AIMS OF PROGRAMME 2.1 To allow researchers and research entities in the SABINA network to have the opportunity to recruit individuals to enhance their research scholarship. To provide outstanding young researchers with an opportunity to develop their research skills within the SABINA network and to transfer new skills to institutions in the network. To develop the careers of Post-doctoral Fellows as academics by encouraging participation to a limited degree in teaching and co-supervision of postgraduate students. The institution concerned should benefit from the presence of the Post-doctoral Fellow by enhanced research productivity through the increased level of publications and the throughput of post-graduate students.

The award will be available to all appropriately qualified staff members in the network institutions, but preference will be given to supervisors and/or co-supervisors of students in the network.

3.

THE POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOW 3.1 A Post-doctoral Research Fellow is regarded as a young researcher (normally up to 35 yrs of age, though exceptions can be made where motivation is provided) with a doctorate who conducts research at a university or research institute in collaboration with a senior research mentor in order to develop his/her research capabilities, usually before taking up a permanent position. A Post-doctoral Fellow should be regarded as an asset to the institution and be treated and supported as such in the system. The Post-doctoral Fellow may come from any part of the world, but should demonstrate academic excellence. Candidates from African countries will be favourably considered.

4.

APPLICATIONS: REQUIREMENTS 4.1 Only supervisors with a fulltime appointment status and with an existing track record in research will qualify for a post-doctoral fellowship grant. Exceptions may be made in cases where a candidate’s expertise could be an essential stimulus for a new and important research field, or where it would accelerate the development of a research group with great potential. The quality of the research plan in which the fellow will participate, and the potential for increasing the research output of the group through the award of the fellowship, serve as important criteria for the award of the Fellowship. The focus of the research should be related to natural products in line with the objectives of the SABINA network.

5.

REQUIREMENTS OF FELLOWSHIP CANDIDATES 5.1 5.2 Post-doctoral fellows are required to have a doctorate or equivalent degree. Candidates may not have attained their highest qualification more than seven years prior to their appointment as Post-doctoral Fellows. The expertise and research focus of the post-doctoral fellow should contribute to a noticeable increase in good quality research outputs. The abilities and previous achievements of candidates will be important criteria in identifying suitable fellows. This should be supported by at least two letters of reference from academic sources (e.g. the candidate’s doctoral supervisor) to testify to the

5.3

candidate’s academic abilities and the suitability of his/her research experience for the proposed research project. 5.4 Candidates should preferably not have obtained their most recent advanced degree at the institution where they are to take up the Post-doctoral Fellowship. Candidates will not be allowed to work or provide formal services for additional remuneration in the form of a salary. Applicants should inform SABINA of teaching commitments expected of the postdoctoral fellow.

5.5

6.

DURATION OF FELLOWSHIP 6.1 Fellowships are awarded for one to two years. In the case of an application for a grant made for a two year period, this fact should be clearly stated in the original application. At the end of the first year a satisfactory progress report will justify a continuation. Normally no fellowship will be awarded for a third year.

6.2 7.

VALUE OF THE FELLOWSHIP 7.1 The Post-doctoral fellowship consists of a bursary of $16 000. The bursary may be supplemented from other sources subject to the regulations of the institution concerned. In addition, a travel allowance not exceeding the amount of $1 000 is available for travel to and from the host institution at the commencement and termination of the support period. The allowance may also be used to cover the costs involved in obtaining a visa endorsed to conduct research where this is necessary. The relevant amount will be paid only upon the lodging of a claim to SABINA. The grant-holder may apply for additional funding from SABINA to cover the running costs for the Post-doctoral Fellow up to a maximum of $7 500 per annum, based on a budget to be submitted with the application. However the grant-holder should ensure that the necessary infrastructure is available for the proposed research.

7.2

7.3

8.

PROCEDURE 8.1 Applications should be submitted by the research leader and should provide information according to the attached format. In the event of a successful application the research leader will become the grant-holder and accountable person for the grant. The application should be supported by the Head of the Department and the Dean, or by the relevant manager in the case of an application submitted by a research institute.

The fellow will be informed in writing of the award of the bursary, as well as the logistical arrangements, by the SABINA administrative office The post-doctoral fellowship must be taken up within six months of its allocation. A fellowship cannot be transferred from one fellow to another within the approved support

8.4 8.5

period unless approved by SABINA.
8.6 The term of the post-doctoral fellowship will commence on the date of arrival at the host institution. Renewal of the fellowship for the second year (in cases of grants made for two years) is dependent upon submission of a satisfactory progress report. The report must be submitted by the grant-holder according to a format to be supplied by the SABINA administration. Applications for the first round of funding should be submitted by 30 June 2009. Applications will be accepted after this date subject to the availability of funds.

8.7

8.8

9.

REPORTING 9.1 A final report completed in accordance with the prescribed format should be submitted by the grant-holder to the SABINA administrative office within one month after termination of the Fellowship. If information on publications by the grant-holder and postdoctoral fellow is not available at the time of reporting, it should be indicated in the report and the information should be submitted to SABINA when it becomes available. The Post-doctoral Fellowship Programme will be monitored on a continuous basis and periodically submitted to evaluation.

9.2

9.3

10.

OTHER IMPORTANT REQUIREMENTS 10.1 The grant-holder and the relevant department should ensure that the necessary infrastructure and funds are available for the proposed research when the post-doctoral fellow joins the University. The funds will only be released upon written confirmation from the Head of the Department that the necessary infrastructure for hosting the candidate is in place. The programme does not provide financial support for family / dependents of the Post-doctoral Fellow. The grant-holder should as soon as possible negotiate with the Fellow to ensure clarity on the role

and expectations of both parties. 10.4 The grant-holder should ensure that tasks related to the research do not expose the Fellow to unnecessary risk.
