WNMU ALUMNI BULLETIN
Alumni Greetings
Well, it seems to be the perfect time for “Old Man Winter” to leave and Mother Nature to
share some of her Spring beauty with us!
Hola! The Great Race is being planned, and as I write this greeting. Another Silver Sixties
Reunion for that same weekend and thoughts for Homecoming 2008 are being put on
paper. I believe the interest in our Alumni is growing and good things are about to happen
for us. The Great Race is going to be another fun filled week of activities building up to
the weekend of the race. If you have not been back to WNMU during the springtime
lately, please come join us. The campus is a beautiful place to be. Hope to see you then.

WNMU ALUMNI BULLETIN
Greetings From President John Counts, Ph.D.
It is an exciting time to be part of the Western New Mexico University family as we embark
on a new year. As I compose this message, I am in Santa Fe advocating for critical funding
for your alma mater at the 2008 New Mexico State Legislative Session. If we are
successful, not only will the University have the funding necessary to continue serving our
students, we will also have the opportunity for some much-needed funding for
infrastructure to address our aging facilities. The infrastructure monies will most likely be
included in the statewide November general obligation bond election. Alumni are essential
to the passage of the statewide election and we will ask you to consider the issue on the
general election ballot in November 2008.
As an alumnus of WNMU, you are a critical component of the great Mustang family by
showing pride for your University and spreading the good word about WNMU. I encourage alumni to help the University
by providing suggestions for new programs or assisting in recruiting students to WNMU. We want you to share with us
ways that Western can make a difference in the state, nation, and world. As part of WNMU’s commitment to engage our
alumni, the position of Alumni Director, formerly held so capably by Ms. Christy Miller, will be upgraded from a part-
time position to a full-time position. A search to fill the vacancy is currently underway. Another change you will see is
the alumni position will now report to the Institutional Advancement Office under the leadership of Ms. Linda Kay Jones.
She and her staff will provide much-needed support to the Office of Alumni Affairs. We expect great things from this
area in the future and your support during this transition period is important to its success.
I would be remiss if I did not recognize your fellow alumni who were honored at Homecoming 2007. Congratulations to
all of our outstanding alumni!

WNMU ALUMNI BULLETIN
New Football Tradition
A special tradition was established at the game thanks to an initiative by Dr. David
Darling, WNMU alumnus and former WNMU Regent. Dr. Darling had a replica of a
classic 1920s - 1930s era leather football helmet created to use as the “traveling trophy”
for the annual football competition between WNMU and NMHU. The victorious team
keeps the trophy until such time as the annual game is played again and a winner
determined. We are thankful to Dr. Darling and the other folks who assisted him in
establishing this new tradition.
Dr. Darling described the new tradition as follows. “Beginning in the year 2007, the
winner of the annual football game between New Mexico Highlands University and
Western New Mexico University shall be presented this leather football helmet trophy as
a symbol of the triumph on the football field in this competition between student representatives of these two
distinguished state universities of higher learning. The trophy shall reside in an honored place in the halls of the winning
institution until such time as the annual game is played again and a winner determined.
In a larger sense, however, there will come a day when you young scholar-athletes will look back upon this special
moment in time. You will see this helmet as a reminder that the lasting rewards of good sportsmanship and rigorous
competition are not measured only in the scores. They also are measured in the ability to win or lose with dignity and
grace -- and respect for one’s teammates and coaches as well as one’s opponents on the other side of the line.”
At Homecoming 2007, the mighty Mustang football team was victorious over the New Mexico Highlands University
Cowboys, 29-16.

February 18, 2008
We are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of our dear friend and classmate Connie Lou
Cope. There are really no words that can express our sense of loss and grief. Connie accomplished
something that we will always remember, bringing many of us together after a lapse of 40 years, in
a truly memorable reunion experience. Who can forget that contagious smile, or that lovely
southern accent. Connie was a true force of nature, and her enthusiasm was infectious.
Connie Lou left us at 7:19 P.M., Monday, February 18, 2008 after a lengthy battle with
complications following heart surgery. At her side were her brothers Johnny and Tommy Cope,
and nephew little Johnny.
We miss her now....we will miss her always. …Walt Winkowski

Mystery photo - do you know any of these students?
Laverne Rison gave us this picture. On the back of the picture it says “1946.” Laverne said she is the girl on the far right.
Fellow alumnus, Jimmie Jones, suggested the young man sitting at the table might be Richard Cummings, and the dark
haired young lady to the right of him, looking down at the table, might be Betty Butterfield. Let us know if you can
identify anyone else in this picture. Call 575-538-6320 or email alumni@wnmu.edu We will even accept “snail mail.”
