Improve working conditions at Van Der Lingen Plein Parking!
I regularly utilize the recently completed parking lot at Van Der Lingen Plein, Paarl. It is very convenient, especially as the supermarket located there has extended shopping hours, which is great! The only concern I have; is for the persons, predominantly youth, employed to operate the parking booms for long hours and in all weather conditions mainly due to, which appears to be, faulty parking tickets issued by the dispenser at the parking boom. The machine, almost always dispenses faulty tickets thus requiring a person to be of assistance to drivers at the booms of both the Main Road and van Der Lingen Street’s. The staff is literally sitting outside, on a curb, not even a chair, at the boom. Please don’t get me wrong; I am in total support of the job-creation initiative, especially for our youth, however, it would be much safer if the owners of the parking lot can provide proper “shelter” for these workers at these booms, as done at many other parking bays with an option to pay for the parking, in this way decreasing the risks and protecting the workers. basis. Consequently, the building of a boundary wall is envisaged. Limited financial means however, poses a challenge. The home thereof appeals to any builders, both employed or unemployed, in the community who wishes to assist in making the erection of a boundary wall possible. A “day wage” will be paid for services rendered. This is an urgent call to those community members who wish to make a difference.

Thank you for keeping us in the loop!
I would like to commend your newspaper for keeping us up-dated on all the latest developments within Drakenstein on various levels. I recently enquired about the Paarl CBD Developments and I was very happy that in last week’s issue, dated 16 October 2009, our Mayor Charmaine Manuel, in the article headed, Good Governance, gave a brief, yet informative response from the Drakenstein Mayoral Committee; not only on the CBD Development, 2010 Feedback, Boland Cricket seeking partnership with Drakenstein, the draft Rural Development Strategy as well asan Integrated Poverty Reduction Project for Fairyland. As residents of Drakenstein, we have a dire need to be aware of what is happening within our communities and of projects or initiatives from various role-players, especially our municipality, that can be of benefit to ourselves and the broader community. As it is not always practical to have regular feedback sessions or meetings with civil society and stakeholders, which is imperative, it is a great idea that the municipality uses the medium of the Drakenstein Express, which is freely distributed widely in our communities in order to keep us informed.

Ps. I can’t think of the proper word for the shelter at parking booms... can you....kiosk-like structure. Will read article again of the one that was knocked over by truck at the tunnel
