Knowledge of topic (Includes school-wide content) 4 Exemplary Demonstrates extensive understanding of story, insight and originality, including insight into its characters and its nuances. Uses an extensive range of vocabulary already learned and incorporates new words from the original text Exceeds expectations: the story flows from one point to another without pause except for dramatic purposes. Demonstrates mastery of pronunciation and grammar. 3 Proficient Demonstrates effective understanding of topic: i.e. story in its details, its plot. 2 Satisfactory Demonstrates adequate understanding of story: Is familiar with the story and most of its characters. Some details of plot. Uses an adequate range of learned vocabulary with some new words from the text, but only as necessary. Acceptable. Tells story with less detail, minor confusions, occasional breakdown in fluency. Acceptable pronunciation and adequate grammar neither of which impedes communication. 1 Limited Demonstrates minimal understanding: not too familiar with the story. Little detail. Some knowledge of characters and plot. Uses a low range of mainly learned vocabulary with few, if any, words from original text. Little heed to the sequential order of the story, choppy presentation, limited fluency. Minimal ability. Minimally acceptable pronunciation, limited control of grammar, impedes communication of story.
