(Eagle) was founded in 1958 and is the industry leader in the design and manufacture of machines used in metal tube forming to shape and manipulate metal tubes, and services to automate and integrate these machines. The company’s principle products are tube bending machines, tube endforming machines and machine systems used in the manufacture of automotive exhaust systems, automotive structural components, mufflers, catalytic converters and automotive fluid handling tubes and structural components. The company employs a total of 175 people in its manufacturing facilities located in its corporate headquarters and its parts and service facilities located in Indianapolis, Indiana, and Shanghai, China. The Challenge Eagle is recognized worldwide for its innovations in tooling and equipment for tube endforming. Their quick change, drop endforming tools remain the standard for the endforming industry today. After operating on Intergraph’s CAD system for a number of years, the company knew that it needed to introduce 3D modeling into its design environment for greater innovation capabilities and maintain its position as the market leader. After some thorough research on CAD systems, Eagle made the decision to change its environment over to Pro/ ENGINEER in 1991 for greater product creation capabilities. The change to Pro/ENGINEER opened the door to greater design and innovation possibilities; however, it provided some complex challenges for the company. Eagle’s engineering team was unable to use Pro/ENGINEER to its TM Enabling Engineering Innovation R E T U R N O N R A N D maximum capabilities due to lack of software knowledge, in turn causing users to face a steep learning curve, increased product design times and reduced productivity. And with multiple Pro/ENGINEER release updates, it proved even more difficult for the engineering team to stay current and up to date with their skills. Pro/ENGINEER’s Hole dialogue box also posed a challenge. It did not conform to Eagle’s standards for creating holes forcing the company to manually reconfiguring the Hole geometry and Associated Annotation for each assembly. Some design dissimilarities between the engineering team were also occurring, plus natural turnover from a company in business as long as Eagle created disconnects in design processes. Specifically, new staff engineers were not leveraging the company’s legacy data and new parts were continually being reinvented without past file utilization. Eagle was facing another challenge – automation. The company was spending approximately 1,882 hours per year manually entering Bill of Material (BOM) requirements for their models due to lack of automation with the company’s ERP system. The manual entry process was cumbersome and, at times, data entry errors occurred. Customer Success Story The Solution “With RAND’s assistance, we were able to set competency requirements for our Pro/ENGINEER users, fully assess their skill levels through RAND’s User Skills Survey, and implement RAND developed training geared toward each user’s areas of improvement.” With the decision to deploy Pro/ENGINEER into their company, Eagle was seeking an organization to provide experience, knowledge, and the ability to gear the deployment to the company’s needs and requirements. That’s why Eagle engaged RAND Worldwide, a company they saw as a true partner and service provider with the capabilities they were seeking and the expert staff they needed to make the overall implementation a success, at present and in the future. Since 1991 RAND Worldwide has provided Eagle with consulting and software implementation services, which included an initial Pro/ENGINEER needs assessment analysis and the development of two custom automation tools: BOMPro, an automated BOM utility, and a Hole creation utility to meet the company’s product standards. In addition, RAND Worldwide provided a comprehensive training program through its Education Services division. The training consisted of a User Skills Survey (USS), a RAND developed tool designed to assist Pro/ENGINEER users in rating their core functionality for the software to effectively identify skill gaps. The USS provided targeted training recommendations design to suit each user’s skill level to further maximize Pro/ENGINEER usage for increased on the job productivity. After USS completion, RAND provided instructor-led classroom training and desk-side mentoring days focusing on the areas user needed improvement. Today, Eagle’s newly hired engineers receive a USS and any RAND training needed to meet the company’s core software competency requirements. With RAND’s guidance, Eagle formed a weekly internal Pro/ENGINEER user group giving engineers the opportunity to openly communicate and share product design best practices. TM Enabling Engineering Innovation R E T U R N O N R A N D The Results For the past 14 years, Eagle has benefit from highly trained staff engineers with RAND’s education services. Users continually meet the required core software competency requirements defined by Eagle and the user’s advanced skill levels continually provide the company with reduced design times, and high productivity and program usage. RAND’s custom developed automation tools have eliminated additional time constraints on the engineers allowing them to focus on key development tasks. The Hole creation utility has removed daily time spent on the reconfiguration of the Hole Configuration Files, while BOMPro has freed the company to focus on more important design projects instead of manual BOM entries. All custom BOMs are now error free, rapidly and effectively auto-generated, and communicate directly to the company’s ERP. BOMPro has enabled Eagle to reduce its BOM entries to just 25 hours per year, a 75% time and cost savings annually.
