Dear Participants, Lectures, and Guests:
The First Asia-Pacific Region Training Course on Hazardous Waste Management and Practice, March 8-12, 1999 was successfully conducted in Tsinghua University Guest House, Beijing, China. In this training course, experts from China, Japan, Australia and USA were invited to give lectures on hazardous waste management, technology and information system. Some of the participants also prepare excellent reports and materials for the presentation and discussions in this training course. Site visits to incineration facility and wastewater treatment facility were also arranged with the support of Yanshan Petrol Chemistry Corporation. Through these activities, participants can understand one another with the hazardous waste management situations, and this is helpful to improve the management of hazardous wastes Tsinghua University Guest House and the implementation of the Basel Convention in the Asia-Pacific region. We would like to express my sincere thanks to the Secretariat of the Basel Convention (SBC), State Environmental Protection Administration of China (SEPA), Japanese Government, Australia Government, US Ecology and Environment Inc., Yanshan Petrol Chemistry Corporation for the support to this training course and for their providing with resource persons. We would also like to thank the embassies of the related countries for their support to the training course. Thanks also to Tsinghua University for the great support. In addition to this, we hope that governments of the developed counties, international organizations, non-government organizations, industrial sectors and experts will continue providing support to the Asia-Pacific Regional Center for Hazardous Waste Management Training and Technology Transfer to promote the implementation of the Basel Convention in the Asia-Pacific region. We are strengthening our capability so that we can provide higher quality services on training and technology transfer for the Asia-Pacific countries and regions. An officer from Kazakstan Embassy together with the participants of their country also takes part in the opening session. APCHW provides, in addition to all accommodation, a welcome dinner (Presided by Mr. Qiao Zhiqi) and fare well dinner (Presided by Mr. Zhang Liwei) for all participants and lecturers. Officers from Japan Embassy are invited to the welcome dinner.

Discussion and Listening

Tsinghua University provides with facilities with meeting rooms and power point projector connected to
Internet, which is very convenient to give presentation. Participants with their own

questions in mind concerning hazardous waste management in their countries are eager to know the solution. Each presentation is followed by an open discussion.

Closing session and more…

The closing session of the training course is chaired by Mr. Zhang Liwei, deputy director general, Department
of Pollution Control, State Environmental Protection Administration of China. On behalf APCHW, Mr Zhang expresses his thanks to SBC and all participants and expert. He believes that the training course will make contribution the to the countries in Asia-Pacific in their Basel will region of APCHW

implementation Convention, and continue making this contribution. Each participant is granted with a certificate for participating in the first training course on hazardous waste management and practice (see right two photos). Experts are also awarded with souvenirs (see left photo).
