									AN INTRODUCTION
TO POTENTIAL PARTICIPANTS / PARTNERS / MEMBERS / ASSOCIATES
1 What is “FLOE”? We are a small group of likeminded individuals who have formed a non-profit organisation [voluntary association] named Free Life On Earth [herein after referred to as “FLOE”]. Situated in Cape Town, South Africa, FLOE was established by its founding members, David Lipschitz and Ninette Potgieter on 11 December 2008. FLOE’s main objective is to promote and facilitate educational and training programmes / initiatives relating to environmental awareness, greening, clean-up and sustainable development projects.

[For more information regarding the structure of our organisation, please feel free to request a copy of FLOE’s Constitution (founding document)].
2 What are we about? Members of FLOE are passionate about preserving nature and leading lifestyles more in tune with the natural environment. It is a fact that many human actions have negative implications for the environment and pose a threat to the continued existence of fragile eco-systems and life forms on Earth. Through educational and inspirational initiatives, it is our aim to show the people of South Africa (and the world) that it is possible to live a rewarding and DESIRABLE lifestyle without threatening humanity’s wellbeing and Earth’s precious natural resources. We are of the opinion that success should not be measured by how much material “wealth” (and debt) one can accumulate throughout one’s life, but rather by how one takes responsibility for one’s own actions by reducing one’s negative impact on the natural environment. We believe that although modern living has forced us to become a disconnected society, the spirit of community and the value of the precious gift of life CAN BE restored in us, through choosing to live more consciously TODAY. 3 Our name The name “Free Life On Earth” signifies the Association’s two tenets:(i) Life is energy. By harnessing Earth’s natural renewable energy sources (instead of using other harmful unsustainable methods of power generation), we are “freeing” life on Earth.

Modern society has necessitated placing a “cost” on living. We aim to promote actions that will prove that through harnessing renewable energy, recycling, stopping wastage and conserving natural resources, it is possible to reduce your cost of living AT NO COST to the environment, thereby offering freedom for Life on Earth.

The acronym “F.L.O.E.” also signifies the voluntary choice to live a lifestyle that honours the harmony and

FLOW of nature and life.

The flow of the wind, sun rays, and water are all freely available renewable and

sustainable forms of energy. It is time that we utilise these gifts! 4 WHY ARE WE CONTACTING YOU? We are in the process of recruiting individuals who wish to contribute to our efforts. We may have heard about your expertise in a certain area of green technology, or we may have simply met you and noticed the “green” sparkle in your eyes or perhaps we believe that you may know of someone who would be interested in somehow contributing. We wish to only involve people who become excited after reading this introduction. We believe that everyone who shares our passion and agrees with our tenets will somehow play an integral part in helping FLOE get off the ground. We believe that even the smallest action or insight contributed will be instrumental to the success of our initiatives. If you have nothing specific to contribute, then you can still become part of the FLOE Movement by joining as a member. Membership is FREE! We believe that even if you may not have been leading a “green” lifestyle up until now, it is not too late to start! 5 OUR FIRST PROJECT – CAPE TOWN CENTRE OF GREEN LEARNING 5.1 Overview Our first FLOE project will be a “Centre of Green Learning” (CGL) situated in Cape Town. This centre will showcase and promote renewable energy and other innovative “green” technology systems / concepts in a “real world” environment. Our main objective is to help educate people about the effects of human actions on the environment and on our health and to offer solutions and ideas for how one can reduce one’s carbon footprint and to raise awareness about the benefits AND DESIRABILITY of using renewable energy, recycling, reusing, stopping wastage, conserving energy and natural resources and generally leading a lifestyle that is more in tune with nature.

Our Vision The Cape Town Centre of Green Learning will be a beautiful sight to behold! We envisage having a strawbale “welcome centre”, making use of passive and active solar technology for the welcome centre’s energy/heating/lighting/cooling needs. All décor and finishes will be sourced from local natural and recycled materials. We plan for all structures on site to be “off-grid” and powered by renewable energy and made using a combination of different eco-building materials and designs. This may include a prototype low-cost dwelling made of sandbags, a geodesic dome “green house” for growing food; green-roofed structures and recycle bins made of cob/adobe, an “earthship” café and research centre [an “earthship” is a type of passive

solar home made of natural and recycled materials]. We will also utilise grey water and rain recycling
systems to conserve water, black water (biodigestor) & composting systems to deal with waste and to help produce methane gas for cooking and composting for growing food. We also intend to have a small “open” vegetable farm on site. The café will serve light meals for visitors (using organic food from our “farm” and methane gas and/or solar ovens for cooking). Solar panels, wind turbine(s) and other renewable energy products/systems will be displayed and used on site in a “real world” environment. (Note: Final development plan
still to be finalised).

5.3 A

How the Cape Town Centre of Green Learning will benefit Cape Town, the people of Cape Town and the people of South Africa This project will benefit South Africa’s population by offering a centre for “green” learning teaching how one can become more self-sufficient and environmentally friendly by harnessing recycling, gardening, energy & water conservation, and other eco-sensitive habits in one’s daily life. It is our intention to offer various short courses / lectures on site to visitors including:(i) How to build the systems showcased on site; (ii) How to grow organic vegetable gardens; (iii) How photovoltaic, wind turbine, grey and black water systems, biodigestors, & other RE technology works; (iv) Which plastics/other materials products are suitable for recycling and how to recycle responsibly; (v) Innovative tips for how to re-use, conserve energy & water; (vi) How to shop “eco-consciously”; (vii) How to make compost; (viii) “Green” cooking, and much, much more!

This project could contribute to offering a solution to South Africa’s housing problem by promoting the building of small eco-friendly dwelling(s) which are low cost, sustainable, easy to erect, which can be duplicated on a large scale especially in poor rural communities, and that offer a comfortable and desirable lifestyle of “living off grids”;

C

This project will serve as a magnet for architects, electricians, builders, designers and plumbers to allow them to see for themselves how easy (or difficult) it is to implement “green” solutions in their respective trades / industries;

D E

This project will contribute to the growth of the renewable energy sector in South Africa and will spark students’ interest in pursuing Environmental, Science, and Engineering fields of study; This project will encourage the growth of small to medium sized local businesses in the “green” sector thereby stimulating job creation, strengthening South Africa’s economy and contributing to poverty reduction;

F

This project will contribute to restoring hope in individuals concerned about the environment by offering those individuals “do-able” and proactive solutions to the global warming problem and to South Africa’s energy crisis;

G

We intend to make this project a “proudly South African” initiative by promoting the use of local materials, products, and services as much as possible thereby contributing to making South Africa more economically self-sustaining. This will ultimately contribute to the increase of exports and foreign investment;

H

This project will have the knock on effect of stimulating similar initiatives in South Africa and possibly around the world. It is our intention to use this Centre of Green Learning as a model for similar future developments throughout Southern Africa;

I

This project will showcase the “green” work of local artists and designers thereby supporting South Africa’s rich arts & culture sector which in turn will have the knock on effect of promoting “green” innovation and entrepreneurship in young South Africans;

J

Once the CGL is up and running, we will have created many permanent jobs. We will need to employ tour guides to give on-site tours, people to maintain the centre, hosts/hostesses to run the welcome centre, lecturers to provide training to visitors/students, farmer/gardeners to run the vegetable farm, waiters & a chef to run the café, consultants to give RE advice, etc;

K This project will contribute to fostering healthy relationships across cultural divides thereby promoting unity, wellbeing, and the love of life in our country and in our people, as we all work together towards a brighter future for all; L This project will contribute to the City’s “Green” quota and will help put Cape Town and South Africa on the world’s “Green” map. 5.4 Where will the CGL be situated? We have identified an ideal piece of municipal land in Cape Town for the siting of our Centre of Green Learning. The following are our reasons for choosing this site:A Although the site is not very large, we believe the site is the perfect size to accommodate the planned erection of the facilities / structures listed below:(i) A few cob/eco-structures/buildings and possibly a geodesic dome and/or an “earthship” (see point 5.2); (ii) Grey water systems and rain water capture systems; (iii) A black water system/biodigestor using the collection of methane gas for cooking; (iv) Numerous solar panels of different kinds allowing suppliers/sponsors to showcase their products where they are being demonstrated in a “real world” environment; (v) Wind turbine(s) allowing suppliers/sponsors to showcase their products where they are being demonstrated in a “real world” environment; (vi) An organic vegetable farm; (vii) There is currently an advertising board on the property. We plan on powering this board with renewable energy and displaying “real-time” interesting “green” information/facts such as how many kwh/MW of wind and solar energy is being generated on site at any given time, etc; B The surrounding properties house 2 centres of learning (a high school and a library) and a playhouse. These facilities all have presentation / conference / training facilities. We will encourage these underutilized facilities to partner with FLOE to give them the opportunity of offering their facilities to be used for the purpose of hosting “Green” experts, NPOs, and other organizations to lecture / speak and / or hold workshops / seminars for the public and for visiting schools / students. We hope to form a partnership with the playhouse which will allow for the showcasing of educational “green” plays focusing on teaching children how to become more eco-conscious; C Having a high school next to the property will ensure that school children can be involved on a daily basis, either before or after school or even during their life orientation classes.

ambassadors telling their parents, friends, and thereby the world about what we are doing. They will get excited about the project and we think that mathematics and science courses at the school will flourish; D E F The property is a windswept property perfect for the siting of wind turbine(s); The property is an open property perfect for the siting of solar panels; The property is visible from a major road and will give a good first impression to visitors. We believe that the project could also become somewhat of a tourist attraction, thereby benefiting Cape Town’s Tourism sector; G H I J K The property is centrally situated; It is serviced by two major roads; The site has an incredible view of Table Mountain which is great for the spiritual nature of the site and locates it as a venue of significance in Cape Town; The tenants / owners of the surrounding properties will benefit from having this project situated adjacent to their properties; The site is not suitable for residential development due to it falling within the 50 year flood line. We also believe that it is also not suitable for any other type of development due to its size and due to it being surrounded by land zoned for educational purposes; L The CGL will not have a negative impact on the environment. On the contrary! This initiative will prove to be immensely beneficial to the people of Cape Town, South Africa, and, of course, to our natural environment. 6 FINANCIAL REQUIREMENTS 6.1 We require funding for operating and other costs even though we are making every effort to minimize costs by obtaining sponsorships / donations for RE equipment / supplies / products / services / building materials in return for having the products showcased on site, and to have the recruited experts offer their services/expertise voluntarily in exchange for the exposure they will gain from being involved in the project. We encourage corporates and other interested donors to please approach us about potential involvement in this exciting initiative; 6.2 A Upon receiving finance and other donated resources (such as services/expertise) we will finalise the following:FLOE’s official web presence;

Ninette went to school in the USA, started working in South Africa in the hospitality industry which lead her into the real estate industry. Ninette then studied small business management and worked as a conveyancing paralegal in a large law firm in Cape Town. Today Ninette owns her own business offering administrative and management services to clients locally and abroad. Ninette enjoys spiritual growth, writing, nature, photography, poetry and yoga. After Ninette underwent a lifechanging experience, she became passionate about “living in the moment” and leading a more conscious lifestyle. She started her “green” efforts with conserving, recycling, growing vegetables and buying a worm farm and she and her life partner Greg are also now aspiring to soon live off grids. 9 CONCLUSION The founders of Free Life on Earth are very excited about FLOE’s first Centre of Green Learning project and hope that after reading this document you agree that it will be highly beneficial for the people of South Africa and for our natural environment to have this project brought to fruition. We hope that you are just as excited about becoming involved and pledging your support for this innovative and uplifting project to enable us to successfully get the project off the ground without delay.
