KWADUKUZA MUNICIPALITY SCOOPS ANOTHER AWARD! The Provincial Cleanest Town Awards Ceremony held in Newcastle on 22 February 2008 saw KwaDukuza scooping the award in the Best Landfill site category, which goes with a cash price of R100, 000.00. The competition is held under the auspices of the Department of Agriculture and Environmental Affairs. Addressing the participants at Pine Junction in Newcastle, MEC for Agriculture and Environmental Affairs Mr Mtholephi Mthimkhulu said the competition “was launched to encourage best practices in order to deal with the challenges of appropriate waste management practices and its link to health and poverty related issues, to clean up the province and protect our natural resources so that we may create a clean and healthy environment.” According to MEC Mthimkhulu the responsibility for the regulation of waste disposal sites will soon be devolved to provincial environmental departments. A major aim of the department in this regard is to encourage the diversion of waste from landfill sites through recycling and composting projects. This in turn will result in job creation and increased community participation. KwaDukuza Municipality makes a successful showing for the second time in this competition. For the 2006 competition KwaDukuza won in the Community Participation category which carries a prize of R50, 000.00. This amount of money was used in the clean-up campaigns in Shakashead, Ntshawini, Gledhow, Lindelani, Darnall, KwaDukuza CBD, Shakaville, Etete, Stanger Manor, Thembeni, Groutville Mission, and Dube Village. With regards to the amount of R100, 000.00 which has recently been won, the department of Agriculture and Environmental Affairs will not release the funds until the Municipality submits a business plan to the department. MEC Mthimkhulu ordered that these funds must be spent on poverty alleviation programmes pertaining to waste management practice within the Municipal area of jurisdiction. In this way the department will ensure that the funds are spent for the purpose they are meant for.
