Mac Remote Desktop 3 http://www.apple.com/remotedesktop      New features: auto-install, network-based Spotlight searching, 30 Automator actions, drag-drop between clients Spotlight search functionality across networks could raise significant privacy concerns Would ARD licensing conflict with TBA central Remote Assistance charter? SLG used to fund licenses for dept IT contacts o Gary to contact Kevin M regarding numbers/data License = per administrator seat o $299 for unlimited client license o $149 for 10 client license  SOE looked into Macromedia Breeze as remote access alternative. Costly, but may be option for central RA charter New Coop Apple Tech    Gabe Stalnaker Comes to us from Pfizer Welcome aboard Gabe!

Husky PC/Mac image status    10.4.6 standardized across both PPC and Intel image builds Intel image includes iLife 06 suite as well (all Intel Macs ship with 06’ by default) See the SLG site at: http://slg.uconn.edu/adhocmac.html for a listing of software, configuration, and group members Community Updates  Potential vulnerability with LiveUpdate for Mac o Fixed in later updates  SOE have seen abnormalities with battery life, etc on Powerbooks o Clearing out PRAM (Command-Option-P-R) resolves the issue  iLife Licensing o no situation where iLife is not needed o Clif H still working on numbers/argument to present to SLG  Any usage data or user testimonials would greatly assist o Matt has copy of iLife 04 installer disc o Draft iLife 05 installer set on ChemBio server  If anyone has copy of iLife 05 installer on CD/DVD, that would probably be a better installer to make available on server  SAV Disk Image o Should administration client be included alongside the client? o Windows installers are separate, so should be Mac  Deep Freeze http://www.faronics.com/html/DFMac.asp o Garvin has tested and works great o Restores Mac to “frozen” state on reboot

o Users can add, remove, delete, muck-up anything and Mac is instantly restore to “frozen” state on reboot o Could be an issue in public labs if power dies and students lose data saved to HD o According to website, integrates with Apple Remote Desktop  iTunes University http://www.apple.com/education/solutions/itunes_u http://itunes.stanford.edu o SOE has applied and been approved by Apple o Currently seeking approval from Attorney General o Many faculty have expressed interest in podcasting o Apple hosts all content – offloads server demands outside of dept/campus o Instructors can create both public and private content areas o Art may be interested in using within Von Der Mehden for storing student music, etc o Gary/Matt to keep group posted on progress  UConn Apple/Mac User Group o Last meeting general agreement on the idea of running ½ meeting as Mac workshop, ½ group discussion o How about running podcasting seminar through the user group and inviting faculty? o Possibly some issues of discomfort in having faculty & students at the same table o Co-op has conference room, could use this to run monthly workshops ala: retail Apple Store’s nightly workshops  See Westfarms Apple Store page for examples: http://www.apple.com/retail/westfarms o Could we do this via a rotating speaker/presenter format? o Regular workshops on new Apple/Mac technologies could be a great service to the community o Sign up to UCMac list for group info/updates: http://listserv.uconn.edu/ucmac-l.html
