Highland Park alumni: Do you have an old HP letter jacket? When was the last time you wore it? The HPHS Alumni Association invites you to go up to your attic and pull out your letter jacket because you, along with all other HP alums, will wear your jacket

this Saturday, Dec. 10, at the state championship football game in Tyler while Highland Park tries to win its first state football championship in 48 years. Alums are encouraged to show their support for the Scots by wearing their letter jackets from way back when. The older, the better. Also, at 12:30 p.m. sharp Satur-

day (before the 2 p.m. kickoff), alumni are invited to gather, wearing their letter jackets, on the grass hill on the north side of the stadium (just to the right of where you enter the stadium on the Highland Park side of the field) for a group photograph.

PROUD OF MOM: Henny Wright’s daughter, Sierra Stead, may not understand it all yet, but she does grasp that her mom has accomplished a lot. Here she shows off some pictures of her mom sharing some casual moments with Walter Mondale and Jimmy Carter.

Wright is right for HPISD
By MERRITT PATTERSON

The Highland Park Independent School District simply could not maintain its impressive standards without the contributions from the PTAs and preschool associations. With school finance in uncertain times, these organizations are a necessity. How do these groups of moms, historically perceived as unemployable and maybe even incapable of work outside the home, pull it off? That’s easy. They are, in fact, the business-savvy women who have been running profitable companies, steering our government and organizing corporate America. They just found something more important to do. A few weeks after Jimmy Carter announced his candidacy for president of the United States, he addressed an undergraduate political science class at Yale University. Seventeen-year-old freshman Henny Wright was never the same. So impressed by his message, she skipped classes for the rest of

that day, following him from venue to venue as he made his way through New Haven, Conn. She even snuck into the closed Daily News meeting to hear more of his bid for office. That night, after he delivered a campaign speech, he opened the floor to questions. Wright raised her hand each time and finally as he announced that he had time for one more, she got her chance. Today she cannot remember the question that she asked. It was overshadowed by Carter mentioning he had noticed that she was following him. He was impressed and offered her a job on his campaign staff. She left Yale in January 1976 as Carter’s campaign was in full swing. Then 18-year-old Wright began by working caucuses in Mississippi. She was transitioned into fundraising by organizing the first fundraiser that Carter personally attended, a dinner in Chicago. It was a huge success, and the campaign committee knew it. She played a key role in facilitating many of the fundraisers that fol-

lowed. Her duties included meeting with Carter before each event to prep him on the potential financial supporters that would be in attendance. She recalled one of the most exciting times, the Democratic Convention in New York. Knowing that Carter had the nomination, the time was spent at glamorous par-

ties in the professional company of political figures that few had the privilege to be in. In January 1977 she returned to Yale and graduated with her class despite having been gone an entire year. During the last semester of her senior year at Yale, she was offered a position at the Democratic National Committee in Washington. After graduation she continued working with the DNC and then moved on to work on the White House staff for Sarah Weddington and then the Carter campaign for re-election. When the Republicans claimed the White House with the defeat of Jimmy Carter in 1980, Wright went to Yale law school. She originally intended for her law degree to be a credential rather than a practice, but she eventually co-founded and remains of counsel to the Washington, D.C., law firm Goldberg, Godles, Wiener & Wright. Wright had her daughter, Sierra, in March 2000. Recently, Wright returned to Washington as one of only three people asked to testify before Con-

gress concerning the personal side of her good friend and Chief Supreme Court Justice John Roberts. Wright is currently the chairwoman of the board of trustees of the Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center and is vice president of the board of trustees of the statewide organization Children’s Advocacy Centers of Texas. She also serves on the hostess committee and as the public affairs liaison for the Armstrong/ Bradfield Preschool Association. Though the door to an office somewhere in Washington still reads “Henny Wright,” miraculously, the Armstrong/Bradfield Preschool Association has her time and endless talents. That is how the HPISD overcomes unimaginable hardships — women like Wright work graciously behind the scenes.

HAPPY TRAILS: Jim and Ginny Tobin of Dallas found a cool, damp but sunny afternoon to take a walk along the colorful Katy Trail near Turtle Creek. The Friends of Katy Trail are now encouraging the purchase of gift memberships for the holidays to help support its fundraising efforts.

The holiday season is back, and with it is the perennial problem — what to give those hard-to-shop-for people on your gift list. To help, the Friends of the Katy Trail is offering gift memberships for the holidays. “A Friends of the Katy Trail membership is a perfect gift for the runner, walker, biker, inline skater or nature lover on your gift list,” said Eric Van Steenburg, executive director of the Friends of the Katy Trail. “It’s also a great gift for the person who wants to see Dallas become an even better place to live.” The Friends of the Katy Trail is a nonprofit organization created to raise money for the design, construction, maintenance and security of the Katy Trail, a 4-mile ribbon of green set among 30 acres of nature in the densest part of Dallas. As a way to say thank you, the Friends of the Katy Trail gives all members unlimited use of Katy Trail Trek bikes housed in lockers on the north end of the trail. In addition, the organization offers a membership levels and benefits that include: I Individual Members — $35 donation Quarterly newsletter

Invitation to all member events and parties I Couple Members — $65 donation Same benefits as individual members at a $5 savings from the price of two I Good Friend Members — $150 donation Benefits listed above Choice of Katy Trail logo T-shirt, travel mug, water bottle or baseball hat I Better Friend Members — $500 donation Benefits listed above Invitations to exclusive Better & Best Friends Member parties I Best Friend Members — $1,000 donation Benefits listed above Special acknowledgement at member events Katy Trail Kids memberships are also available for children for a $20 contribution. Memberships are available by calling the Friends of the Katy Trail at 214-303-1180 or by visiting www.KatyTrailDallas.org and clicking on “Join” across the navigation bar.

Helping with Katy Trail improvements
Membership donations will help the Friends of the Katy Trail continue to make improvements along the Katy Trail. The Friends is currently raising the final $5 million from the private sector to complete the $23 million capital campaign and make the Katy Trail into a great American park. The next major improvement to the Katy Trail will be construction of the Thomsen Overlook, an openair plaza overlooking Reverchon Park at the south end of the trail. Work is expected to begin in early 2006. The plaza includes a 750foot ramp connecting the Katy Trail to Reverchon Park below. The Eugene McDermott Foundation gave the largest gift for the plaza, which will be named for Carl J. “Tommy” Thomsen, a retired Texas Instruments executive who walks daily on the Katy Trail. The other major components of the Katy Trail capital campaign are completion of the trail’s running path, installation of the landscaping master plan and quarter-mile naming gifts.

Getting to the heart of the community
I cut my teeth on daily news – working for two of the largest metro dailies in Arkansas. However, I think I found my true calling when I moved to Texas and started working at a small-town newspaper in Leonard, about 30 minutes away from McKinney. I learned community journalism, a breed that allows a reporter to be more invested in the successes and failures of the community he or she covers. In my four years there, it was soon forgotten that I wasn’t born there, that my granddaddy’s granddaddy hadn’t grown cotton in the fields that are now prime pieces of retail land space. We toe a fine line between being emotionally involved in the stories we cover and trying to be objective at the same time. It can be done, and when done properly, both sides of a controversial issue end up agreeing that you were fair — or both sides hate it. I stood on the sidelines of football games, taking pictures while my feet were soaking wet and freezing. I lost three shoes to the muck my first year and bought rain boots for the next season. That season, it didn’t rain one game. I met a widow from Mexico who moved with her four sons so that they could have a better life. It wasn’t your normal immigration story, however. Three of her sons were terminally ill with Duchene’s, a form of muscular dystrophy.

BETHANY ANDERSON
Much like Park Cities residents are willing to extend a helping hand when needed, the entire community embraced the family — and made sure that the boys had wheelchairs, the first they’d ever owned, even though one of the boys was already 21 and in the final throes of the disease. And although I eventually moved on, I still think about the people I met. I still hear from them, too, which is another benefit of community journalism — you make friends along the way. So when this Neighbors editor position became available, it was love at first sight. The chance to be a part of a community — and to be able to commemorate anything from a first-grade play to the Scots’ triumphant run at a state title is an honor. I’m also making some amazing friends along the way. And the help I get in making your Neighbors a part of your lives is amazing as well. From Merritt Patterson’s new series on Park Cities moms (this week we meet Henny Young) to Tam Mott’s remembrances of a football game

that brought Highland Park the co-championship 60 years ago, I get some of the most amazing submissions. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, Laura Schultz — a godsend in her own right, along with her mother, Gail — has a little sister, Ellie. This week, Ellie is also contributing photographs of a girls’ basketball game at Highland Park Middle School, Shakespeare Feast and a constitutional convention that is held with the eighth-graders each year. Laura brings us reaction from the semifinal game in Denton, as well as shots from the Highland
Park High School wrestling team. Sharon Nolan graciously sent

NICE HARDWARE: Coach Randy Allen and the entire team take time to celebrate the win before gearing up for the state championship game.

State bound
Scots head to Tyler for final matchup after thrilling win over Stephenville
In front of a crowd of more than 20,000, the Scots showed some magic Dec. 3 against Stephenville as they continued their trek toward a state title — with only one stop remaining now. And what a doozy of a stop that will be, too. Saturday, Dec. 10, will see the Scots in Tyler facing off against Marshall at Rose Stadium. The state final pits 14-0 Highland Park against the 13-1 Mavericks. It’s the Scots’ first trip to the championship game since 1957. A win would also make them the first HP team to go undefeated since 1945. Highland Park’s 41-38 victory over Stephenville was a nail-biter. A 7-yard touchdown pass from Matthew Stafford to Holt Martin with about 37 seconds left in the game gave the Scots the lead after a fourth-quarter deficit.

Member of 1945 team compares his team to today’s
Editor’s note: With the Highland Park High School Scots on the verge of claiming a state championship in a game Saturday, Dec. 10, against Marshall, Scots alumnus Tam Mott contributed this article about differences between this year’s team and the 1945 championship team.

December 10, 2005

By TAM MOTT

The Scots were undefeated in 1945, with two ties, Wichita Falls and the finals with Waco. The final game was played in the Cotton Bowl before 45,000 people — the stadium’s capacity at that time. The article in a Dallas newspaper said: “The largest crowd that ever saw a high school football game in the South on Saturday yelled itself silly for the co-champions of Texas, Highland Park and Waco. They started moving into the Cotton Bowl two and a half hours before the 2:30 p.m. kickoff and kept rushing the gates until well after game time. At the half, standing room was still on sale.” There are many differences in the school and the game of football between 1945 and 2005. One big one is that if HP wins state this year, it will be undefeated with no ties. The 1945 team tied for state, with two ties but no losses on the season. However, a 7-7 tie with Wichita Falls during the season was followed by an 18-0 win in the playoffs, and a 7-0 win over Waco during the season was followed by the 7-7 tie in the state finals. Up through 2004, the 1945 team was the only undefeated football team in Highland Park history. It is fitting that the record held up for 60 years — and in the 61st year, a new record can be set. The 1957 team won the state championship but suffered losses during the regular season. Some of the differences in the 1945 team and today’s are: 1. Highland Park High School only had grades 10, 11 and 12. Now it also has grade nine. 2. School started in the fall the day after Labor Day, not in August. The first semester ended in January. Exams were after the first of the year. 3. In high school, there were only the B-team and varsity — no freshman team. 4. Lifting weights was pretty

much unheard of. The team did what exercising they did in the off season on their own. Most of it involved running to get in shape. 5. It was possible to play and letter in several sports because of the lack of off-season requirements in the sports. Doak Walker (1944) lettered in five — football, baseball, basketball, swimming and track. Three others lettered in four sports in the mid-1940s: Jim Flowers in 1944-45 and 1945-46, Bill Moxley in 1944-45 and myself in 1945-46. 6. There was a two-week spring training period. 7. In the fall, there was a football camp. The team lived in the gym for one or two weeks before school started and it was all football. 8. In a postcard from Walker and Bobby Layne to the team for the 1943 season, they said “No more Cokes.” Cokes were supposed to shorten your breath. They came only in 6-ounce bottles (and were a nickel) and it was thought that if you wanted to get in top shape, you did not drink Cokes. 9. There were no facemasks used unless an injury (i.e. broken nose) required one. Also, as I remember, each team member had his ankles taped for the games. Nearly all football shoes were high top, and all had cleats that screwed on. There was only one pair of shoes per player. 10. The 1945 team had 48 members in the program for the state finals. The 2005 team listed 106 in the HP/Ennis game program. And, by the way, the 1945 state finals’ 16-page program cost 15 cents. The 2005 116-page program was $3. 11. The 1945 11-man team played both ways — offense and defense. Basically, if you left the game during a quarter, you could not return until the next quarter. Today, there are substitutes on nearly every down, and the players specialize in either offense or defense. However, the ratio of the number on the team versus those playing is not far apart. 12. The 1945 team played the straight “T” formation — the quarterback under center and the three backs across behind him. The line was balanced with no player in motion. The 2005 team usually has the quarterback getting a di-

rect snap from the center, with one, two or no backs beside him. The “T” formation was pretty new at the time (HP had run a single and double wing the year before), and defending the “T” formation was a problem for some of the teams. 13. There were two coaches in 1945, a head coach and an assistant. In the 2005 program, there are 11 coaches listed, plus a head trainer and two assistant trainers. In 1945, there were two managers who took care of the uniforms and all the other duties. There were no trainers. 14. Water breaks included glass milk bottles in 1945. The managers had a little wire six-bottle carrier they used when they went on the field. There were no paper cups or water squirters. 15. The 1945 games were played on grass or dirt (as the field was trampled by practice and

games during the season) or mud when it rained. Artificial turf was way into the future. The Highland Park stands were wooden, with a wire fence running in front of them between the stands and the field. I doubt that there were any reserved seats. 16. The 1945 starting linemen averaged 181 pounds, with one player over 200 (at 205). The 2005 line averages 248 pounds with all five players over 200 pounds. In 1945 the ends averaged 157 pounds; in 2005, they average 160. And 1945 backs averaged 172 pounds. The 2005 backs average 201 pounds. Total starting offensive team averages were 173 pounds in 1945 and 206 pounds in 2005. 17. The quarterbacks called the plays on the field in 1945, with the only coach’s suggestions being made during time outs or when a

play ended up close to the bench. There was no communication between coaches and quarterbacks or the defense on each play as there is in today’s game. 18. Finally, I think the goal posts were on the goal line in 1945, not on the end-zone line as they are in 2005. And place kickers kicked straight on with their toes — not side-winding as they do today. Today — Dec. 10, 2005 — the Highland Park football team squares off against Marshall in Tyler for the state championship. The 1945 state championship game was played Dec. 29. The 1945 team had its goal to practice on Christmas Day. They accomplished that goal.
Tam Mott was a member of the 1945 undefeated Highland Park football team. His mother’s scrapbook of the season helped with this story.

HP Blue Wave pleased with fall results
By JEFF OLSEN

I’d like to give you an update on the great things the high-school swim team has done this fall. Our girls’ team finished first at the North Zone Class 4A and Under Texas Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association meet before Thanksgiving, with the boys finishing in second 12 points behind Keller Central. This weekend we took 14 of our kids to the South Zone TISCA meet in San Antonio. In this incredibly competitive field of 45 teams — representatives literally from Houston to El Paso, from Dallas to Corpus — and more than 400 swimmers, we finished a combined fifth behind 5A powers Pflugerville, S.A. Reagan, S.A. Churchill and Round Rock Westwood. Our girls were fourth overall (a mere 1 point out of third behind S.A. Taft), and our boys were 12th. With just 14 kids representing Highland Park, our relays had to be great to have an impact in the team standings. They were: Girls’ 400 medley relay: third (Alexandra Jennings, Natalie Sacco, Alexandra Weber, Bolton Harris) Boys’ 400 medley relay: 12th (Travis McDaniel, John Bannon, Fernando Lara, Davis Zapffe) Girls’ 200 free relay: second (Sacco, Jennings, Meredith Higgins, Harris)

Other individual top-three performances were posted by Harris (50 free) and Jennings (1,000 freestyle). Other girls competing who have not been previously men-

tioned were Lindsay Mackintosh. Alicia Nicoud and Tori Beckman. Bannon also was in four championship final swims to lead the boys’ outstanding effort, finishing fourth in the 200 breast stroke. Alec Caywood was our sixth male competitor, finishing 12th in the 1,000 freestyle. We have one more meet this fall (Dec. 9 at the Lewisville ISD Invitational) before finishing up the dual meet season in January (Frisco, Mesquite ISD and Southlake Carroll). We will host District Friday, Jan. 27. Please take time to congratulate these kids — this team — for doing such a fine job of representing our school.

The Expressions of Gratitude Art Contest is held each year for students in North and East Texas during Thanksgiving week. The artwork submitted must show what the students are thankful for during the year. Pamela McKnight, art teacher at Bradfield Elementary, offered her students extra credit if they created and submitted an art project for the competition. Gracie Bailey’s entry, “All the Blessings That I Have,” was selected as the grand-prize winner for the competition.

Gracie’s entry is a mixedmedia piece that includes gratitude for her parents, siblings, pets and nature. Gracie, a fourthgrade student at Bradfield, attended the award ceremonies with her mom, Susan, and McKnight. Gracie was presented the grand-prize ribbon and a cash prize during the ceremony. This year, Gail Ewing, another fourthgrader at Bradfield, received honorable mention in the Expressions competition.

R.S.V.P. sooner rather than later
Dear Mrs. McVeigh,

December 10, 2005

Once an invitation is received that includes a number to call to R.S.V.P., what is the proper amount of time to respond in? I was taught to respond within three days of receiving the invitation. No one seems to abide by this rule anymore. What’s up? M.C. of UP

should be the standard rule. If there are circumstances that a person is waiting to resolve, a phone call stating that you will get back to the hostess by a particular day would be considerate.
Dear Mrs. McVeigh,

Official etiquette says that if an R.S.V.P. is requested, you are obligated to respond “as promptly as possible.” I agree that we are not responding as quickly as we should anymore. This is one of those rules that people have gotten relaxed about, probably due to our overscheduled lifestyles. I think a three-day rule

Dear Anonymous,

What is the traditional/proper way to eat sushi rolls? Several times I have been out and feel like the entire roll is too large to eat in one bite, but when cut, it falls apart. Give me the dish.

You are never obligated to accept an invitation. A simple “we are not available on that date” is all you officially have to say. In this situation, you could invite one of your son’s friends who is not friends with the birthday boy to do something fun so your son is not so upset about not attending the party and you have an honest explanation of having prior plans if the hostess presses you for a

specific reason. The other thing that would be nice when you decline is to say, “I am sorry we cannot make it to the party. Since my son will be so disappointed, what day would your son be available so we can take him out to dinner and have our own celebration with him?” At this time you can give him his gift, and hopefully this will distract the hostess from questioning you further.

Area schools, city worth being proud of
In this month’s column, I want to salute those who strive for excellence. I recently attended a PTA meeting at Hyer Elementary to celebrate the school being named a Blue Ribbon school by the U.S. Department of Education. As reported here in Park Cities Neighbors, although only 25 public schools in Texas reached that level of student achievement, the Highland Park Independent School District, placed three schools — Bradfield Elementary, Highland Park Middle School and Hyer Elementary — on that Blue Ribbon list. Regardless of how the dispute over the Robin Hood school finance plan (a system that sees about 70 percent of HPISD’s property tax revenue head to the state for redistribution) is resolved, it’s clear that our students, educators, parents and the community as a whole have embraced the school district’s belief that education is a shared responsibility. This process, which will assure continued success, begins with teachers who appreciate that each student has unique po-

sales-tax collection address information for hundreds of local businesses, resulting in a refund of $1.92 million. As a result of the corrected data and continued review, the city should see higher sales-tax revenue year after year, and that means the city won’t be so dependent on property taxes for major budget items. In the same newsletter, there is another example of excellence, which provides residents with a level of service that is virtually unmatched by any other community in Texas. By operating its own sign shop, if a road sign is damaged in a car accident, the city’s traffic department can make a new sign and re-post it on the same day. Not only does this kind of response avert potential safety hazards with trained sign-makers on site, but the city also avoids having to contract the work out, avoiding a costly and inefficient process. In closing, I firmly believe that we are privileged to live,

tential, and it’s energized by parents and residents who volunteer as teacher aides and cafeteria workers. Its dividends are also recognized by those who volunteer for various PTA, Mad for Plaid and dad’s clubs projects and by residents who support the district’s Education Foundation. Those who work for the city of University Park strive for excellence, too. This can-do spirit is demonstrated daily by things large and small — and, again, teamwork is the key. If you’re a resident of University Park, I hope you will take a moment to read the December issue of The Arbor, the monthly community newsletter that is delivered with your utility bill. It details how members of the city’s finance department helped the state comptroller correct

A GOOD DEBATE: Caroline Beecherl and Hartley Hobson enjoy the debate.

Building the Constitution
HPMS students bring history to life in debate
By BETHANY ANDERSON Neighbors Editor

While the rest of the nation debates what the framers of the U.S. Constitution intended on a variety of topics, a group of eighth-graders at Highland Park Middle School took a good, hard look at the mindset of those original delegates last week. Every year, social studies teacher Julie Churchill puts on a mock constitutional convention as part of her lesson on American

history. The event teaches on many levels — the intent of each delegate, the arguments behind certain provisions and even how to debate. “The students were given the biography of a real delegate that attended the constitutional convention,” Churchill said. “The classes went to the computer lab and did research on the convention, the city of Philadelphia and their delegates before we re-enacted in the classroom.” After preparing, the students

arrived Nov. 28 to find their usual classroom set up in state delegations. “Students took turns offering their opinions and plans, according to what their delegate wanted,” Churchill said. The re-enactment continued through Dec. 2, with the students signing the final document at the bottom – just like the original framers did. But the re-enactments were hardly carbon copies of the original convention. Churchill said some

classes stuck very close to the actual U.S. Constitution, “and some were very different.” “One class voted to have a threehouse Legislature with one house having representation based on the wealth of its citizens,” she said. “Another class voted to abolish slavery completely. Still another voted to have three executives. You never know what they’ll come up with.” Regardless of the outcome, Churchill said the lesson had four objectives — getting the students to learn about the convention and

the issues that arose, learn about the delegates they were selected to attend, take a viewpoint “and back it up by having to think on their feet.” “We also wanted to get them to experience how people can get along and come to a logical and reasonable compromise in which everyone can agree,” Churchill said. “I think the students enjoyed the convention; I hope that they appreciate more what these founding fathers did to make our country great.”

Royally fun
Middle school’s Shakespearean Feast courts tradition
STAFF REPORT

Neighbors • Park Cities

The annual Shakespearean Feast at Highland Park Middle School always happens in royal fashion, complete with fanfare, court jesters and royalty. The music and dramatic arts departments celebrated the Shakespearean Feast Dec. 1-2 and served and entertained families and friends in the HPMS cafeteria. To pull off the event — now in its eighth year — the students make or borrow their costumes.

The band performs, and there is a horn fanfare, a royal procession, king and queen, orchestra performers, court jesters, mimes, magicians, tumblers, dancers, choir and beggars. This year provided a special treat — William Shakespeare (actually British actor Rob Clover-Brown, father of a McCulloch Middle School fifth-grader) came for a surprise visit. The principals also sat at the head table with the king Wes Cole and queen Meredith Barnes. Students served a dinner of loaves of bread with stew and corn and tarts.

Rally working
When the Scots and their fans got together for the weekly pep rally Dec. 2, neither showed any signs of fatigue after extending their pep rally schedule into December. As the cheerleaders cheered, the Belles danced and the Scotsmen performed their skits, team and fans alike anxiously awaited the answer to the question: Will this be the year? After a win last Saturday and the state finals slated for Saturday, Dec. 10, they’ll soon find out.

FEELING SKITTISH: Members of Scotsmen perform in a skit featuring Drew Newman’s commentary on the team.

TWIRLY GIRL: Carly Bender, HPHS’ award-winning twirler, entertains during the rally.
