MISSION Cobb Christmas, Inc., staffed 100% by volunteers, provides food and gifts at Christmas time to Cobb County’s lowincome families ensuring the holiday spirit is alive for our client families, our donors and volunteers alike. Set‐Up: December 8‐11 Set‐ Up: December 8‐ Distribution: December 12‐14 Distribution: December 12‐ HISTORY Cobb Christmas, Inc. is a non-profit, 501(c)(3), all-volunteer organization started in 1963 by The Center for Family Resources (then known as the Cobb County Emergency Aid Association, Inc.) to assist the low-income and working poor families of Cobb County at Christmas time. The early years were made possible through community involvement from groups such as the American Legion, Cobb Jaycees and United Way of Cobb County. In 1978 the Christmas program became independent and incorporated in 1980. Today Cobb Christmas is the oldest and largest program of its kind in the county. Mark Your Calendars For 2008 HOW YOU CAN HELP • Host a toy drive This can be at your office, place of business, with your civic organization, in your neighborhood or at your church. On average we give four to five toys per child and need around 15,000 toys with over 3,000 children who will be registered. Volunteers help sort toys at the Distribution site. HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS Families seeking holiday assistance are carefully screened for eligibility jointly by The Center for Family Resources (CFR) and the Cobb County Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS). Qualifying families are assigned an appointment time during the distribution period to pickup their gifts. Distribution is held at Jim Miller Park and managed by the Cobb Christmas Board of Directors with the help of hundreds of volunteers who sort food, stuff stockings, select toys and pack gifts. Each family receives at least a box of food, four new toys and a filled Christmas stocking for each child. To maximize limited resources, Cobb Christmas coordinates with other county-wide holiday assistance programs to ensure that there is no duplication of services among the client population. • Stuff stockings We need stockings with small, inexpensive gifts (including bath and toiletry items, but no food or candy). “Stuffed” stockings should be labeled by age and gender. Each child served by Cobb Christmas receives a stuffed stocking, so we need over 3,000 of them. • Work Set-up or SetDistribution We occupy Jim Miller Park from Monday, December 8th through Sunday, December 14th. This year we will need more than 300 volunteers to make it all happen. This includes setting up the warehouse, managing it and distributing toys to each client family. The Cobb County / CCT StuffA-Bus pulls in to unload toys and gifts. HOW WE DO IT Each year the Cobb Christmas Board and volunteers invest nearly 2,000 hours to prepare for the annual Distribution. During Set-up and Distribution week, over 350 volunteers from throughout the community contribute another 3,000 hours to help fulfill the Cobb Christmas mission. Much work goes into the program each and every year… and as soon as Distribution ends, work on the next year begins. Between 2003 and 2007, Cobb Christmas served over 6,600 Cobb families. Gifts and toys were distributed to over 18,300 children with food assistance going to more than 27,400 children and adults in each qualifying household. We estimate, conservatively, that Cobb Christmas has distributed between 80,000 to 90,000 gifts and toys in this time period. • Participate on a committee Work takes place year-round for Cobb Christmas. We are always in search of volunteers who wish to be involved in the planning and execution of fulfilling our mission.
