SCOPE
This specification details the requirements for the repair and reconditioning of hand operated chain pulley blocks for mining applications.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS TO BE SPECIFIED BY THE ENGINEER
The following requirements shall be specified on every invitation to tender, contract or order. • • • Title, number, date, and issue of this specification the WLL chain block serial number.

DEFINITIONS
For the purpose of this specification the following definitions shall apply: APPROVED SABS WLL : : : Approved by the Engineer in writing South African Bureau of Standards Working Load Limit: The maximum mass that a chain block is designed to raise, lower or suspend. It is equal to or greater than the safe working load Original Equipment Manufacturer

The following terms are defined in the Conditions of Contract: AAC, Company, Contractor, Engineer.

4 4.1

REQUIREMENTS GENERAL
Chain blocks shall be restored to manufacturers specification and performance to comply with AAC specification 664/3. Unserviceable components shall be replaced with genuine spares obtained from the original manufacturer. Repairs shall not be affected by welding. All inspections shall be carried out by competent personnel.

4.2

RECORDS
The following chain block details shall be recorded: • Serial number

4.3

CLEANING
Chain blocks shall be completely stripped and cleaned of all rust, scale, and foreign matter by means of solvent immersion or shot blasting. Care shall be taken to ensure that machined surfaces are not damaged.

4.4

FRAME
The frame shall be inspected visually for cracks and wear and by mechanical means for misalignment. Any cracks or misalignment shall be cause for rejection of the frame.

4.5

GEARS
Gears shall be visually inspected for wear and deformation. Tooth wear which results in backlash greater than that designed for by the manufacturer shall be cause for rejection. Physical damage to gears shall be cause for rejection.

4.6

PINION SHAFTS
Pinion shafts shall be visually inspected for wear and deformation. Shafts worn to the original manufacturers lower machining limit shall be rejected. Pinion shafts with end float greater than the manufacturers specification shall be rejected.

4.7

BRAKE
Brake components shall be visually inspected for wear and damage and replaced if outside the manufacturers specification.

4.8

PAWL
Pawl components shall be visually inspected for wear and damage and replaced if outside the manufacturers specification.

4.9

BEARINGS
Bearings, whether plain or anti-friction, shall be visually examined for wear and replaced where necessary.

4.10

HOOKS
Top and bottom hooks shall be visually inspected for wear , damage and deformation. Replacement hooks other than those supplied by the OEM shall not be permitted.

4.10.1 4.10.2

Gauge lengths: across each hook opening shall be measured and any deformation greater than that specified by the manufacturer shall be cause for rejection. Safety catches: shall be inspected for condition and operation and replaced by original manufacturers parts. Hooks without safety catches shall be supplied with safety catches fitted.

4.10.3

Overload Protection Device Each chain pulley block shall be fitted with overload protection devices of OEM manufacture and design and proof loaded and type tested to OEM standards.

4.11

LOAD CHAIN
The load chain gauge length shall be measured and any deformation greater than that specified by the manufacturer shall be cause for rejection. The chain shall be visually examined for wear and damage. Any wear or damage shall be cause for replacement. Care shall be taken to ensure that replacement chains are fitted without twist. Replacement load chains shall comply with the requirements of SABS 189 and shall have a factor of safety of at least 4 times the WLL. A manufacturer's test certificate for replacement load chains shall be supplied to the Company (see Clause 4.20).

4.11.1 4.11.2

Anchorage and fittings: shall be visually inspected for wear and deformation and restored or replaced. Stripping and engagement device: shall be visually inspected for condition and operation and restored or replaced.

4.12

LOAD CHAIN WHEELS
Load chain wheels shall be visually inspected for wear and deformation. Any wear or deformation which will affect the operation of the chain passing round the wheel shall be cause for rejection.

4.13

HAND CHAIN
The hand chain shall be visually inspected for burrs and sharp edges and restored or replaced. Care shall be taken to ensure that replacement chains are fitted without twist.

4.14

HAND CHAIN WHEELS
Hand chain wheels shall be visually inspected for wear and deformation. Any wear or deformation which will affect the operation of the chain passing round the wheel shall be cause for rejection.

4.15

MANDATORY REPLACEMENTS
The following replacements shall be mandatory: • • • • • • • Nuts Locknuts Plain and spring washers Split pins Circlips. Brake friction pads Oil seals

4.16

LUBRICATION
Chain blocks shall be provided lubricated. Facilities for the lubrication of all working parts shall be provided unless materials with inherent lubricating properties are adopted. Lubricants shall comply with the requirements of AAC Specifications 166/0 and 166/14.

4.17

FASTENERS
Bolts shall be replaced if damage is evident upon visual inspection.

4.18

CORROSION PROTECTION
Chain blocks shall be repainted to comply with the manufacturer's specification.

4.19

REPLACED COMPONENTS
Replaced components shall be returned, together with the repaired or reconditioned chain block, to the Purchaser if required.

4.20
4.20.1

TEST CERTIFICATES
Proof load test certificate: for each chain block shall be supplied to the Company (see Clause 6.1). The certificate shall be signed and dated by the manufacturer and shall contain, but shall not necessarily be limited to, the following information: • • • • • • Manufacturer's name original serial number of chain block WLL applied operational proof load (see Clause 6.1) date and place of test statement of compliance with this specification.

4.20.2

Replacement load chain test certificate: shall be supplied to the Company (see Clause 4.11). The certificate shall be signed and dated by the manufacturer and shall contain, but shall not necessarily be limited to, the following information: • • • Manufacturer's name applied test load date and place of test.

4.21

COMPONENT CHECK LIST
The Contractor shall prepare and maintain component check lists comprising all components for each type and capacity of chain block repaired or reconditioned. The list shall be identified by the recorded details (see Clause 4.2). The list shall contain comprehensive details of all work conducted on the chain block and shall serve as the history record. Acceptance and rejection criteria for components shall be stated. A completed copy of the list shall be returned to the Purchaser with the reconditioned chain block.

QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS
AAC QAP 101 shall apply.

6 6.1

TEST AND INSPECTION METHODS OPERATIONAL PROOF TEST
The following proof test shall be conducted in accordance with SABS 1640 on all chain blocks supplied to the Company. Subject the chain block, by means of manual operation of the hand chain, to a proof load of 1.25 times the WLL. Maintain the proof load for one minute and then release the load by manual operation of the hand chain. The gauge lengths across each hook opening shall show no permanent deformation.

7 7.1

PACKING AND MARKING PACKING
The method of packing shall protect the equipment against damage and adverse climatic conditions during transportation and storage.

7.2

MARKING
The following information shall be hard stamped on a suitable and protected position on the chain block. • • Make and Model Serial number
