									Dear resident

We hope that this email finds you in good spirits and well rested; Happy New Year and all the best for 2009. As a kick start to the year, we are proud to announce that after much planning, training, community support & anticipation SANDOWN - STRATHAVON COMMUNITY ACTIVE PROTECTION (SCAP) will officially launch with its patrol vehicles on our neighbourhood streets later this month. We will cover a rectangle border that includes Grayston Drive, Rivonia Road, Adrienne Street / South Avenue and the river (parallel to Westbrook Place). The exact launch date will be communicated closer to the time. As you are all aware, Sandton is known as South Africa's economic powerhouse with its multinational corporations, luxurious hotels, and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, but despite its secure complexes & closed-circuit cameras, it has still been ranked as one of 10 Gauteng areas that recorded the highest increase in contact crimes. As a zero tolerance neighbourhood active protection programme for residents and business owners of Sandown and Strathavon, the SCAP program is a proactive, multifaceted and integrated plan to help address and minimise crime - particularly contact crime through active patrolling. Endorsed by various SAPS Station Commissioners, community policing forums and the CSO ("Community Security Organisation"), SCAP is a replication of already successful Community Active Protection (CAP) operations with a proven track record in Houghton and Saxonwold, Melrose and Birdhavon (MB CAP), Greater Oaklands and Orchards, Waverley (Savoy and Waverley Active Protection – SWAP), Sydenham and Senderwood, Linksfield, Victory Park as well as Glenhazel – (Glenhazel Active Patrol – GAP), which has reduced contact crime in some of these areas by up to 80%. The components that separate SCAP from other “patrolling” services include:a) A Single Point of Contact: which is a sharecall line available 24/7/365 once we have launched, to which to report any suspicious activity. Call it in to 086 18 000 18. Prelaunch, we will be distributing fridge magnets, car licence disks, phone stickers and lanyards with this number on it b) High performance vehicles: manned by professional, expertly trained ex- military and ex-police personnel (currently undergoing intensive CAP-specific training) that will

patrol the neighbourhood 24/7/365. All of the vehicles have been purchased, and are currently being branded c) An Incident Control and Command Centre (ICCC): Manned by well trained personnel on a 24/7/365 basis, ICCC will rapidly and efficiently coordinate your call, determine the required response and manage the response team. Following any incidents, the ICCC will debrief the victims and perform thorough investigation. The ICCC will also conduct public alerts via sms to inform our residents of criminal movement within and around our suburb. d) Service provider monitoring: Weekly operations and management meetings ensure that SCAP keeps its service provider on their toes at all times. Lessons learned will be communicated weekly via e-mail and SMS e) Block Watch – The intention is that the streets of the neighbourhood will be patrolled every night by three cars, with two neighbours per car, in constant contact with the ICCC. Their role is purely to gather information and NOT to intervene. If you are interested in participating in Block Watch, please email your details to To ensure the sustainability of the programme, residents are requested to contribute a monthly levy. Residents that have not yet contacted SCAP are urged to do so and become part of a working solution to community safety.
