									CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: 3RD SASAR MERITORIOUS AWARDS

The SASAR Meritorious Awards are presented by the Minister of Transport or his/her designate every two years on behalf of the SASAR Organization. The objectives of these awards are primarily to promote, recognize and reward voluntarism; to recognize extreme bravery and exceptional skills displayed by SAR units; to promote and recognize financial aid to voluntary organization; and to recognize outstanding contribution to search and rescue in general. The awards focus mainly on the valiant unsung heroes and heroines who live up to the motto of the SASAR Organization by constantly placing their lives at risk to ensure that others live.

THE AWARDS

The awards come in three types, namely, SASAR’s Exceptional Bravery Award, Friends of SASAR Award and SASAR’s Aristrocat’s Award.

SASAR’s Exceptional Bravery Award

This award is to be presented to an individual or group that demonstrated extreme bravery, courage and exceptional skills during an aeronautical or maritime search and rescue operation as member (s) of a voluntary organization. The award will be presented under the following three categories:

Category 1: Category 2: Category 3:

SASAR’S Platinum Exceptional Bravery Award SASAR’S Golden Exceptional Bravery Award SASAR’S Silver Exceptional Bravery Award

The panel/ authority delegated with the powers to select candidature will recommend, depending on merits and facts presented which case should be selected for the first, second and third categories.

Friends of SASAR Award

This type of award is to be presented to an individual or group associated or not associated to any SASAR structures but has consistently and/or constantly by way of financial aid, availing services and/or other resources contributed to the noble cause of search and rescue. Under this type, the following categories will apply:

Category 1:

Outstanding Community Based SAR Support Group/Unit

To be presented to members of the community mobilized in support a SAR incident (s) and who acquitted themselves exceptionally well towards the success of a mission.

Category 2:

Outstanding Individual SAR Support

To be given to an individual who has contributed personal resources and /or services in aid of SAR missions free of charge over a period of time or during a specific mission which resulted in a speedy and successful prosecution of an incident.

Category 3:

Exceptional Sponsorship for a period

To be presented to an individual or group that has consistently given and reviewed his/her/its financial aid to voluntary organizations over a period of time or sponsored the acquisition of an asset such as a boat, vehicle, communication and other equipment for use by SAR units during a specific period.

Category 4:

Exceptional Novice Volunteer for the period

To be presented to a newly recruited volunteer who has displayed exceptional potential, performance, skills and tenacity during training and in missions where he/she was deployed.

SASAR Aristrocat’s Award

To be awarded to an individual or group in recognition of dedication, commitment, passion, selfless contribution as a champion of search and rescue services in South Africa.

SASAR Platinum Aristocrat Award SASAR Golden Aristocrat Award SASAR Silver Aristocrat Award

HISTORY OF THE AWARDS

The awards were inaugurated in 2005 under three categories, namely the Arthur Bradshaw Award, Andre Botes Award and Perry Ment Award. The first recipients were the persons after whom the awards were named, namely, Mr Andre Botes, Mr Arthur Bradshaw and Mr Perry Ment.

Messrs Andre Botes and Arthur Bradshaw received the award in recognition of their dedication, commitment, passion, selfless contribution as champions of maritime and aeronautical of search and rescue services in South Africa respectively.

Mr Ment received the award in recognition of extreme bravery, courage and exceptional skills during an aeronautical and maritime search and rescue operation as a member of a voluntary organization.

Nominations

Nominations are invited and are to be completed on the appropriate nomination form. The abovementioned criteria should be followed and applied when nominations and recommendations are made.
