Fall 2008
I look forward to seeing you on Friday, t you are able to attend. From the Director: Sandy Lynch

Music to our ears-- The exciting sounds of District XI Garden Club Members back on the beat for the Fall! All of our Broward County Garden Club Presidents and their Boards are stirring up their members with enthusiasm and energy, set to march to the latest tunes of native plants and going green, as well as many other melodies! I’m very proud of all that you do leading our clubs in all of the gardening endeavors here in our “Electric Eleven” territory! Our theme this year is “Spotlight on South Florida” and our District will be in the spotlight soon when our FFGC officers come for the Fall Meeting so please make every effort to join us for that day! You’ll get some great ideas for your clubs while meeting others in our county who have the same goals-educating garden club members and the public and sharing good times while having fun growing things! Please call on me and our board for any help you need this coming year! We’ll be meeting this Friday, the 19th, discussing plans and concerns! Hope to see y’all soon!

Sincere sympathy, thoughts and prayers are with Jane Huckins, her daughters and family on the passing of her beloved husband Steve. The FLGC mourns the loss of long time Pachira Garden Circle Member (1987) Lista Foster. Sympathy is extended to her sons, Timothy and Howard Foster.

Were you on Las Olas Boulevard this summer when the Annie Beck house went by? The house was moved from its location on SE 11th St., to its permanent location at Middle River Terrace Park where it’ll be the Annie Beck Education Center. Annie Beck was one of the founding members of the FLGC and their members have a special interest in her historical house. Our District will be helping with the landscaping of the Annie Beck house, as will the FLGC. I’m proud that all our District XI club members are very helpful and involved in community projects. In addition to personal satisfaction, they also are often a key to success for your garden club by bringing new members, support from government agencies and publicity.

My garden of flowers is also my garden of thoughts and dreams.
A. Urban

Going Green Tips
 Recycle household waste.  Use organic, environmentally friendly household cleaning products i.e. certified to be 100% biodegradable and 100% recycled paper products.  Use energy efficient appliances.  Only wash full loads of laundry and only run the dishwasher when it’s full.  Use compact florescent light bulbs (CFLs); not only do they use 75% less energy, but they also last ten times longer.  Receive and pay bills electronically (online).  Unplug small appliances and electronics not in use.  Turn off electronics when not in use.  Take canvas or recycled bags to the grocery store.  Walk outside instead of using a treadmill or opt for other non-electric exercise, like yoga.  Plant shade trees on the East, West and South sides of your house.
