Provisional Programme
Introduction Young people represent one-fourth of the world’s six billion people, of which 86 percent live in developing countries. Estimates indicate that one in five youth live on less than $1 a day and that as many as 45% live on less than $2 per day. These statistics take on an added significance when they are considered against the many dimensions of poverty, as reflected in the Millennium Development Goals: hunger and malnutrition; lack of access to education and other basic services; high exposure to diseases; unsafe environment and lack of participation in decision-making. Although only one of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) specifically mentions youth, a closer look will reveal the fact that young people are at the core of every goal. The aim of the MDGs is to create a better future for today’s young people, as illustrated in the agenda below. Youth recounting their experience and work towards achieving the MDGs by 2015 will be the main focus throughout the Summit, using sport and culture as entry points.
