JAZZ ORAL HISTORY PROGRAM COLLECTION, 1992 -2008
(25 cu.ft )
History
The Jazz Oral History Program -- an element of “America’s Jazz Heritage, A Partnership
of the Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest Fund and the Smithsonian Institution” -- was created
in 1992. The program coordinated creation, preservation, and access to more than 130
oral history interviews from 1992 through 2002. Subsequent interviews were produced
with funding from other sources.
The Jazz Oral History Program grew from the knowledge that the opportunity to record
and document a generation of jazz musicians, performers, relatives, and business
associates was passing as significant individuals aged and died. Program staff contacted
and worked with potential interviewees to arrange for interviews. Each interview was
conducted by a jazz authority and was recorded on digital audiotape by a professional
audio engineer. The interviews averaged 6 hours in length and covered a wide range of
topics including early years, initial involvement in music, generally, and jazz specifically,
as well as experiences in the jazz music world, including relationships to musicians. The
original DAT interview tapes were then dubbed to audiocassettes and CD to create
protection and access copies.
A number of the interviews were conducted as part of the Ella Fitzgerald Oral History
Project of the JOHP. Funded by the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation, these
interviews focus on the life and work of Ella Fitzgerald. NMAH staff continues to
conduct interviews with American Jazz Masters with funding from the National
Endowments for the Arts.
For more information about “America’s Jazz Heritage” see: www.smithsonianjazz.org
Scope and Content
This collection consists of audio recordings of the interviews organized into three series.
Series 1: original DAT audio recordings. Series 2: reference and master analogue audio
cassettes. Series 3: CDs for reference use. Series 4: Video. Additional documents are
found in Series 5: Transcripts and Abstracts and Series 6: Supplemental Documentation.
A list of the interviewees precedes the container list.
Access
Reference audiocassettes and CDs are available for research use at the Archives Center.
Copies can be made available in accordance with standard Archives Center audio-visual
collections duplication procedures. Archives Center reference staff must first consult
releases to determine if any duplication restrictions exist.
Citation: Jazz Oral History Program Collection, Archives Center, National Museum of
American History, Smithsonian Institution.
Provenance
The interviews were made for the Smithsonian Institution under the auspices of the Jazz
Oral History Program supported by America’s Jazz Heritage, funded by the Lila Wallace
– Reader’s Digest Fund and the Smithsonian Institution. The collection was transferred to
the Archives Center in 2002. Interviews continue to be created for the Archives Center
and the National Museum of American History with funding from the National
Endowment for the Arts.
