Non-Verbal Communication Central idea: Many different ways have been developed to communicate information other than the spoken word. An inquiry into: the alternative systems of communication the ways we communicate through codes, symbols and body language how and why alternative systems were developed Activities: See class blog for culminating activities to the unit.
Mathematics
Number: Explains partwhole number relationships Demonstrates that addition and subtraction equations can be represented in a variety of ways, including the traditional algorithms Ongoing maintenance
Geometry: 2D 3D Describes the features of 2D and 3D objects using the language of geometry: parallel, edge, face, plane Sorts, describes and models regular and irregular polygons Combines 2-D shapes to make other shapes and patterns. Ongoing maintenance
Landforms Central idea: Our planet earth has unique features because of our place in the solar system. An inquiry into: Earth’s landforms and natural features Earth’s position in our solar system makes it different from other planets How we map Earth’s unique features Activities: Earth’s Landforms Identify landforms on maps using a legend or key. Draw a map of landforms. Use report planner to write reports on landforms. Concept map-students label and illustrate a landform Why Can we Live on Earth? Collect information on a report template about a planet. Share information with family. Inquire into Earths special features which allow life to exist- What is atmosphere, gravity, water? Why is Earth warm enough for life? Act out what happens when on another planet without these things. Make a list of what they need to carry to another planet to stay alive. How is Earth Different to other planets? Collect information on a report template about a planet. Assessment: Landform report and planet report. See report rubric on class blog for assessment criteria. Unit of Inquiry
Reading ESL students refer to your ESL teacher’s overview Objectives: To enjoy a range of literature, reading for a minimum of 20 – 30 minutes each day, responding appropriately to text, and demonstrate understanding of the text by completing the assigned activities. Key Skills: *Reading for enjoyment. *Reading for understanding *Reading for the main idea and supporting details. *Retell in detail. *Develop fluency with awareness of punctuation. *To focus on detail of print only when meaning is lost. *Use reading strategies: reading and interpreting signs/symbols/codes; predicting; asking questions for clarification; inferring. Materials and Activities: See class blog. Students will need to keep a daily reading log.
