2007 Contemporary music These guidelines are to be read with the 2007 Arts SA funding handbook which has an overview of all funding programs, information on how to apply, eligibility, assessment, closing dates and more. Read the guidelines that are relevant to your artform and the category in which you are applying. The handbook, guidelines and application forms are available online at www.arts.sa.gov.au or contact Arts SA for printed copies. Arts SA is committed to supporting Indigenous arts, and actively advancing Indigenous social and economic development, through the funding of art and arts projects produced by Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people, or involving or incorporating Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people and cultures as the focus or presenters of work. It is guided by a philosophy of community involvement and ownership. This area of arts practice usually involves collaboration between professional artists and communities, and happens in all artforms. Artists, arts workers, community groups, organisations and local or State Government agencies working in community cultural development may apply to Arts SA for funding of a range of activity in a number of programs and categories. These include: Independent makers and presenters (professional development, creation of new work and presentation of projects) Public art and design (seed funding and commissioning support) Health promotion through the arts – Community arts (promotion of healthy lifestyles and community wellbeing) Richard Llewellyn arts and disability trust (development and celebration of the creative and artistic aspirations of South Australians with disabilities). Page 1 of 6 Overview Arts SA’s Contemporary music program supports the development of original contemporary music and the sustainability and diversity of the local contemporary music sector. All genres of original contemporary music are supported, including rock, pop, hip-hop, country, electronic and dance music, with the exception of original and interpretative classical music. Classical musicians may apply for funding through the Independent makers and presenters program, and should consult the music guidelines, The Contemporary music program contains 11 funding categories to support individuals and groups of musicians in live performance, touring, recording, release and promotion, broadcast and professional development opportunities. Eligibility Refer to the general eligibility criteria outlined in the handbook Arts practice commitments Arts SA is committed to supporting the following areas of arts practice across all funding programs. Indigenous arts and cultures Arts SA recognises the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and artists to the cultural and artistic life of South Australia and 2007 Contemporary music New media Arts SA does not treat new media arts practice as a separate artform. We recognise that all artforms regularly incorporate new media, moving image and web-based activity. Artists and arts projects that embrace a hybrid or interdisciplinary approach and extend beyond a single artform, as well as those that employ digital, screen or sound-based technologies, may apply to most Arts SA programs for a range of activity, including professional development, creation of new work and presentation of projects. Refer to the artform and other program and category guidelines, as appropriate to your project. Amounts available Up to $5000 to be matched dollar for dollar Closing dates 16 March 2007 – notification June 2007 24 August 2007 – notification October 2007 MARKETING AND DISTRIBUTION OF A NATIONAL RELEASE Funding for a marketing and distribution strategy for the national release of a recording demonstrating exceptional promise, which is particularly timely for the musician or group. Applicants must provide a considered marketing and distribution plan with a focus on using the recording to break into the national or international market place, or to further build a profile within these markets. Contextualise the marketing and distribution plan within your business plan. Applicants must be able to demonstrate that groundwork is already underway to build a profile in the national or international market place. Eligible expenses Advertising, promotional and marketing materials, fees for service such as a publicist, website costs, video clip, launch costs, conversion costs. Travel and accommodation will only be considered when it directly relates to the delivery of the marketing and distribution plan. Support material Recorded example of at least 80% of the material and lyric sheets, considered marketing and distribution plan, business plan, evidence of national or international interest, reviews, press clippings, bios, budget plus quotes. Note The professional recording may already exist and does not need to have been funded through this program, or the recording may be currently under consideration for funding at this round or through another funding program. Amounts available Up to $5000 Closing dates 16 March 2007 – notification June 2007 24 August 2007 – notification October 2007 Funding opportunities RECORDING AND MANUFACTURE FOR NATIONAL RELEASE The recording (EP or LP) needs to demonstrate exceptional promise and be particularly timely for the musician or group. Applicants must provide a considered marketing and distribution plan with a focus on using the recording to break into the national or international market place or to further build on a profile within these markets. Contextualise the marketing and distribution plan for this recording within your business plan. Applicants must be able to demonstrate that groundwork is already underway to build a profile in the national or international marketplace. Eligible expenses Recording costs, producers’ and engineers’ fees, mixing, mastering, design work and printing, pressing, remixing. Support material Recorded example of at least 80% of the material as well as lyric sheets, a considered marketing and distribution plan, business plan, evidence of national or international interest, reviews, press clippings, bio, budget plus quotes. Page 2 of 6 2007 Contemporary music EXTENDED MARKETING & DISTRIBUTION Consolidating and extending a successful marketing and distribution campaign for a CD that is currently receiving strong national or international interest. Applicants must provide a considered marketing and distribution strategy to build on the CD’s momentum. Contextualise the marketing and distribution plan for this recording within your business plan. Eligible expenses Fees for service, advertising costs, promotional material, travel, accommodation, showcasing expenses, market attendance, conversion costs. Support material Marketing and distribution plan, business plan, copies of the CD, radio airplay reports, sales figures, website traffic figures, tour dates, reviews, press clippings, letters of support, expressions of interest, promotional material, budget plus quotes. Note: The CD does not need to have been previously funded through Arts SA. Amounts available Up to $5000 Closing dates 4 May 2007 – notification June 2007 24 August 2007 – notification October 2007 16 November 2007 – notification December 2007 HILLTOP HOODS INITIATIVE The Hilltop Hoods are the only hip-hop group in Australia to achieve platinum record status. This initiative recognises the important role that South Australian Government assistance played in the early development of the Hilltop Hoods’ careers. It has been made possible by a generous donation from Hilltop Hoods. The Hilltop Hoods Initiative helps young and emerging South Australian hip-hop artists to manufacture and distribute a CD. It also includes two mentorship sessions with Hilltop Hoods’ Manager, PJ Murton. Eligible expenses Mixing, mastering, design work and printing, pressing, promotional costs, fees for service, launch costs. Support material Support material includes six copies of a demo tape or CD with at least three recorded songs, written lyrics of at least five tracks and a CV. Amounts available $5000 Closing date 24 August 2007 – notification October 2007 Further information Refer to the 2007 Hilltop Hoods initiative guidelines. TOURING WITHIN AUSTRALIA The applicant must demonstrate that the tour will contribute to expanding the musician’s or group’s audience base and industry profile within an existing or new marketplace. You must provide an itinerary, which must include performing at significant venues or at a recognised live music festival or event. Gigs should be confirmed as much as possible. In the case of unconfirmed gigs, evidence of a relationship with relevant booking agents or promoters must be provided. You must describe the strategy behind the tour, including why these destinations have been chosen. Contextualise this rationale within the musician’s or group’s business plan. A marketing and promotional strategy is mandatory. Applicants should have an expectation of performance fees or ticket sales income. These amounts should be indicated in the income column of the budget. Eligible expenses Travel, accommodation, freight, plus a contribution towards production and marketing and promotional costs. There is an expectation that the presenters and venues will meet other costs such as wages or fees and will contribute towards production and promotional costs. Support material Marketing and promotional strategy, business plan, tour schedule, plus confirmation status of gigs, bio, reviews, press clippings, airplay lists, promotional material, budget plus quotes. Page 3 of 6 2007 Contemporary music Amounts available Up to $5000 for touring within South Australia Up to $10,000 for interstate tours Closing dates 4 May 2007 – notification June 2007 24 August 2007 – notification October 2007 16 November 2007 – notification December 2007 INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITY Funding to help build the international profile of South Australian musicians through touring and attendance at contemporary music marketplaces. Priority Individual artists and groups that are export ready and have a strategic approach to building career sustainability. Eligible expenses Assistance may be provided for airfares, freight, marketing and promotion costs and registration fees. Support material Marketing and promotional strategy, business plan, tour schedule plus confirmation status of gigs, bio, reviews, press clippings, airplay lists, promotional material, current CDs, budget plus quotes. Amounts available Up to $15,000 for groups and up to $10,000 for individuals Closing dates 4 May 2007 – notification June 2007 24 August 2007 – notification October 2007 16 November 2007 – notification December 2007 EMERGING MUSICIANS AND GROUPS Developing audiences for contemporary musicians and groups in the early stages of building their South Australian profile. The project can include recording a three track demo. The applicant will need to provide evidence of musical ability with a recording and, in the case of those seeking funding for a demo, the recording should be of the songs to be rerecorded. The applicant must be able to provide evidence of a track record in live performance. For genres where live performance is not the standard, evidence of other activities to build the musician’s or group’s audience must be provided. The provision of a brief marketing and promotion strategy is mandatory. Eligible expenses Recording, pressing (no more than 50), promotion and marketing strategies (for the band or a demo) including posters, advertising, websites, conversion costs. Support material Recordings, marketing and promotion strategy, bio, press clippings, budget plus quotes. Amounts available Up to $1000 (applicants must contribute 50% towards recording and manufacture expenses) Closing dates 16 March 2007 – notification June 2007 24 August 2007 – notification October 2007 MENTORSHIPS AND ATTACHMENTS Mentorships transfer knowledge within the music industry, by placing applicants with respected and outstanding artists and industry professionals for a period of guidance. Mentorships and attachments are usually selfdirected. The details of mentoring or attachment arrangements should be developed through negotiation and could comprise a set period of practical one on one experience or a series of meetings for artistic and critical direction and career guidance. When making arrangements, do so on the understanding that the arrangements are ‘subject to funding’. Priority Projects that bring a high level of technical and creative expertise to the recording process and those with benefit to the broader South Australian music industry. Support material Mentorship or attachment plan, confirmation of the mentor’s participation plus the CVs of mentor and applicant. Amounts available Up to $10,000 Closing dates 16 March 2007 – notification June 2007 24 August 2007 – notification October 2007 SKILLS AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Assistance is provided for a period of intensive skills development through attendance at masterclasses, workshops or conferences. Eligible expenses Travel, accommodation, per diems, conference and workshop registration fees and fees for professional service. Support material Considered description of how the applicant will benefit from the professional development opportunity, information on the workshop, conference etc., itinerary, budget plus quotes. The following are not eligible Certificate, degree or courses of ongoing study in Government or private institutions, in Australia or overseas. Academic activity, including wages for work required as part of any academic program. Activities already supported through Arts SA’s Contemporary Music funding, including Fuse, Ausmusic and Northern Sound System. Amounts available Up to $5000 Closing dates 4 May 2007 – notification June 2007 24 August 2007 – notification October 2007 16 November 2007 – notification December 2007 MUSICIANS IN RESIDENCE Assistance can be sought towards residencies in which outstanding national or international musicians or industry leaders create new work, Page 5 of 6 conduct workshops or masterclasses, and share and contribute to the skills and artistic development of local artists. Eligible expenses Travel, accommodation, fees and per diems for the resident artist. Support material CV of the leading artist and a list of the artists targeted to benefit from the residency plus their bios and the residency’s program of activity. Amounts available Up to $15,000 Closing dates 16 March 2007 – notification June 2007 24 August 2007 – notification October 2007 BROADCAST OF CONTEMPORARY MUSIC The broadcast via television, radio, the internet and other digital platforms plays an important role in developing audiences for contemporary music. Applicants must provide a promotion and marketing strategy for the broadcast. Priority Strategic projects with strong partnerships that have a national or international reach or build new audiences for contemporary South Australian music. Eligible expenses Recording, production, distribution expenses, conversion costs and promotion. Support material CVs of key personnel, MP3s, CDs or videos evidencing the quality of the production skills, programming outlines and list of targeted artists and their bios for the proposed program plus budget and quotes. Amounts available Up to $10,000 Closing dates 16 March 2007 – notification June 2007 24 August 2007 – notification October 2007 2007 Contemporary music SPECIAL INITIATIVES For new and innovative projects aimed at broadening creative capability and expression and building the diversity and viability of the contemporary music sector. Priority Projects expanding audiences and the market base for South Australian contemporary music and those that will strategically benefit the South Australian music sector as a whole. The project will need to demonstrate broad funding partnerships and ongoing sustainability, as this category will support an activity no more than twice. Eligible expenses Venue and production costs, artist fees, travel, accommodation, per diems, fees for service. Support material CVs for key artists and personnel, promotion and marketing strategy, budget plus quotes.
