Position Title: Police Officer Department: Public Safety Full-Time  or Part-Time  (check one) Reports to: Police Sergeant Directly supervises: N/A Job Code No.: 5569 Classification: Non-exempt Hours/wk or Shift: 168/28 Effective Date: 07/19/07 Revised: 11/16/07

Position Summary: Under limited supervision performs general and specialized law enforcement work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

          

Patrols City by bicycle, foot or vehicle, for prevention of crime and enforcement of applicable criminal, traffic and other laws and ordinances. Responds to calls for service and protects life and property. Prevents and suppresses crime. Apprehends violators of the law. Preserves the public order. Completes and forwards required reports for review. Conducts preliminary investigations; gathers and preserves evidence; interviews suspects, witnesses, victims and complainants. Responds to and investigates traffic crashes and enforces all traffic regulations. Participates in police training to maintain an acceptable level of proficiency. Testifies and presents evidence in court. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Requirements:  Knowledge of:  Florida Statutes relative to criminal law, arrest, search and seizure, rules of evidence and court procedures, and of local ordinances and codes.  Practices and methods employed in the investigation of crime, techniques of interrogation, documentation and preservation of evidence and its presentation in court.  The principles and practices of police activity and administration.  Geography of the response area.

Ability to:  Become proficient in use of firearms and Department equipment.  Prepare and submit comprehensive activity and case reports.  Enforce the law firmly, tactfully and impartially and to deal courteously with the public.  Express self clearly and concisely, orally, and in writing.  Maintain clear, concise, and accurate records.  Support the City’s Mission, Values, and Goals.

Education and Experience Requirements:  Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a State issued G.E.D. certificate or equivalent.  Certification as a law enforcement officer in the State of Florida.  Valid State of Florida class E driver’s license. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:  Consistent exposure to outdoor elements and weather conditions.  Occasional exposure to hazardous situations.  Frequent walking, running, and climbing. Tools and Equipment Used:  Weapons – firearms, impact and less than lethal  Patrol cars/bicycles  Computers/Printers  Radios  Telephones/Fax machines  Photocopiers  Cameras – 35mm, instant, digital and video  Video cassette recorders Assignments:  May be assigned to the Uniform Patrol Division; Reports to: Uniform Patrol Division Sergeant.  May be assigned to the Criminal Investigations Section; Reports to: Criminal Investigations Sergeant.  May be assigned to the Training Section; Reports to Training Sergeant.
