RABBITS’ SECTION 2009

What are Rabbits? Rabbit Golf has been played since the 1920’s. It was placed on a firm basis in 1938 when the West Riding Rabbit Golf Association was formed. Well over 100 clubs are currently affiliated to the Association which is now known as the Yorkshire Rabbit Golf Association. This is divided into six areas, Otley being affiliated to the Harrogate area, which stretches from Masham & Bedale in the North to Otley in the South. Rabbit golfers are playing members over the age of 18 years and with a handicap of 16 and above. Membership of Otley Rabbits is open to both full and five day members. Various competitions and friendly matches with other clubs are organised throughout the golfing year, a Rabbits Open Day is usually held in late May, a days outing in June is arranged and other golfing events are organised. The Rabbits section also caters for golfers with a handicap of 15 and below, these are known as Associate Members and they are eligible to play in certain Rabbits Competitions and participate in the Rabbits Outing. Special prizes are given on these occasions. Currently the Rabbits section annual subscription is £3.00, a small sum when evaluating the benefits of being able to participate in Rabbits Golf. Entry for Rabbits cup competitions is £2 per player per comp The Rabbits’ Section organises it’s own unique programme of competitive (and enjoyable) golf, throughout the playing season.

The Opening Meeting This is the first competition in the calendar. It is a 15 hole medal qualifying round to determine the top 16 who qualify to play for the Brunel Trophy which is a matchplay knockout competition. King Rabbit Trophy This is a matchplay knockout competition. There is no qualifying round and no limit to the number of members entering the competition. This is probably the largest Rabbit cup competition. John Wood Putter This is a medal knockout competition. Again there is no qualifying round and no limit to the numbers entering. Millennium Trophy This is a greensomes knockout competition. Again there is no qualifying round and no limit to the numbers entering. Rabbit Captain’s & Rabbit Chairman’s Days These competitions are played in conjunction with official Club competitions and prizes are awarded to both Rabbit and Associate Members. Rabbits Championship This a competition played on Saturdays during the summer in conjunction with the monthly stableford. The best 4 scores count towards the overall Rabbit’s champion,

Rabbit Captain’s Outing This is a full day out to a course selected by the Rabbit Captain. Both Rabbits and Associates are eligible for this very popular day and are able to compete for excellent prizes. Friendly Matches Every year the Rabbits’ Section arranges a number of matches on a home and away basis against other clubs. These are evening matches followed by a meal. They are very enjoyable and selection for the various teams is much sought after. The team consists of 12 Rabbits and will be selected from those that have expressed an interest in playing. The Captain and Secretary will endeavour to select as wide a range of Rabbits as possible for these team matches. Teams from the Rabbits’ Section are entered for the Fowler and Thornton competitions organised by the Y.R.G.A., and also the Winter and Summer Leagues in the Harrogate Area of the Y.R.G.A. These teams are selected on a first come first served basis so watch out for the sheets on the notice board. The team consist of 2 players but reserves are always a welcome bonus when arranging dates with other clubs. Except for Rabbits’ Captain’s & Rabbits’ Chairman’s Days, Rabbit competitions are played off yellow tees. Six day members of the club who join the Rabbits’ Section are eligible to play in most of the Rabbit competitions. Unless the competition is held on a Saturday (some Yorkshire Rabbits competitions)
