Joins President in Call to Service for Summer Projects The City of Elizabeth, State of New Jersey, Union County College, United Way of Greater Union County, Groundwork Elizabeth, and Jefferson Park Ministries, Inc., is taking part in United We Serve, a national effort launched by President Obama to engage more Americans in serving their communities this summer. In a video statement President Obama addressed the issue, “This summer, I'm calling on all of you to make volunteerism and community service part of your daily life and the life of this nation. Economic recovery is as much about what you're doing in your communities as what we're doing in Washington – and it’s going to take all of us, working together.” United We Serve begins June 22 and runs through September 11, and will be observed for the first time as a national day of service and remembrance. The initiative focuses on four key areas: education, health, energy and the environment; and community renewal. It is being led by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that improves lives and strengthens communities though volunteering and service. “Volunteering and community service helps build and improve communities,” stated Mayor Chris Bollwage. “People do not realize what a big difference they can make by just volunteering a few hours of their time. I encourage everyone, especially families, to dedicate some time this summer to serving others and really make a positive impact.” Jefferson Park Ministries, Inc. will be involved in several events during the summer months including: recruiting volunteers, organizing environmental clean ups, hosting a summer youth program, facilitating workshops on Chronic Disease Self Management, and developing a health fair all as part of our summer service initiative. Jefferson Park Ministries, Inc. 213 JEFFERSON Avenue Elizabeth, New Jersey 07207 The first kickoff event is scheduled for Thursday July 8th, 2009 from 10:00am to 4:00pm at Montano Park in Elizabeth, volunteers are needed for this first community project. “In these tough economic times, we need volunteers more than ever,” said Catherine Rousseau Saintilien Executive Director. “Jefferson Park Ministries, Inc. is facing an increasing demand for services, and volunteers can help us fill this growing need. We are pleased to participate in United We Serve and thank the President for making this call to service this summer and beyond.” To make it easy for individuals to get involved, the Corporation created www.Serve.gov, a website that allows visitors to type in their zip code to find local volunteer opportunities, recruit volunteers by posting their organization’s projects, or get ideas for creating their own projects with friends, families, and neighbors. For opportunities with our organization go to serve.gov for our listing. "Jefferson Park Ministries is a good example of a community-based organization which supports the growth of a particular community. In this case, JPM serves various segments of the Haitian community in the City of Elizabeth, providing after-school and summer activities (e.g., performing arts) for youth, parenting classes, programs for seniors, and English as a second language, computer, and occupational classes. These activities help children to move in positive directions and help all segments of the community to stay connected to their roots while integrating into work, family, and civic roles in the larger society." Said Dr. Paul Jurmo, Dean of Economic Development and Continuing Education Union County College James W. Horne, Jr., CEO/President of United Way of Greater Union County is pleased to support the efforts of the initiative. “The Volunteer Center of United Way of Greater Union County has seen a surge in people interested in volunteering, thanks in part to President Obama’s call to service. Opportunities on our website www.unitedwayvolunteers.org will now be pulled on to the www.serve.gov website. We look forward to working with these partners to facilitate volunteerism in Elizabeth and throughout Union County.” Jonathan Phillips, Executive Director of Groundwork Elizabeth, places great value on the President’s effort. “Groundwork Elizabeth’s mission is to improve the quality of our lives by engaging the community to make improvements to the physical environment. I consider President Obama’s call to serve a real motivating force for connecting youth and those in need with the environment and in taking ownership for community renewal.” Jefferson Park Ministries, Inc. 213 JEFFERSON Avenue Elizabeth, New Jersey 07207 “Everyone has something to give, and summer is a great time to get involved,” said Catherine Rousseau Saintilien, Executive Director. By serving this summer, we hope more people in Union County or the State will make an ongoing commitment to volunteering throughout the year.” For more information about the initiative go to serve.gov and for volunteer opportunities please click on find a volunteer opportunity or call Alex Elie or Catherine Saintilien at: 908-629-0041.
