With deep and enthusiastic commitment to our mission, 2006-2007 was packed with energizing new initiatives and amazing successes. What’s new? • A student Success Center that combines academic support, tutoring, career services, the honors program, study abroad, counseling, and health services • A transformed College Union with a dramatic dining commons, expanded Campus Store, contemporary Oaks, the Success Center, and excellent conference and conversation spaces • A marketing campaign with students testifying how they found their “place” at Manchester • New “giving societies” to recognize donors who help keep The Manchester Fund strong, encourage philanthropy in our young alumni, and celebrate planned giving • A new approach to recruitment and retention, buoyed by a top financial aid consultant, more emphasis on marketing, and shared commitment by the entire College community 4 JULY 1, 2006 THROUGH JUNE 30, 2007 What successes do we celebrate? • Three Fulbright scholarship winners – now 22 recipients of the U.S. government’s premier scholarship in 12 years – the highest per capita of any Indiana school • First-year students focusing on “Difficult Dialogues,” learning how to discuss controversial issues respectfully • A nearly $950,000 increase in donations, for total fiscal year giving of $6,982,978 and strong financial support by faculty (76 percent) and staff (50 percent) • A record endowment, now exceeding $42 million 2) be “mission centered and market smart” to maximize our impact in the world, 3) recruit and graduate a student body large enough to utilize optimally the College’s resources, and 4) generate a financial margin sufficient to support the College’s mission and vision. Sweitzer-Riley, vice president for student development 8 JULY 1, 2006 THROUGH JUNE 30, 2007 2006 - 2007 Highlights New programs respond to market demand Partnerships with business and industry inspired a new 150-hour program that ideally positions Manchester College students in the job market well prepared for certification as public accountants. A new biotechnology major is designed to serve a demand for non-medical technicians with broad training in the laboratory sciences. Admissions refocuses, restructures Total restructuring of admissions, assisted by an enrollment consultant, was spurred by a disappointing 48-student drop in fall 2006 total enrollment. Fresh strategies and intense focus on building a strong fall 2007 class resulted in 1,600 applications – the largest number in the history of the College. A transformed College Union opens The College gleefully settled into a transformed College Union that reunites the Campus Store and The Oaks with food service and the mailroom. Construction continued upstairs on a student Success Center and conference rooms. Donors have made the $8.5 million structure into a true union. Giving rises without campaign, incentives Total giving rose almost $950,000 – even without the intensity of a fund-raising campaign or matching gifts from Lilly Endowment Inc. The student Phonathon connected with more donors than ever before, gathering a 53 percent increase in pledges and 402 new donors. Fulbright tradition continues Three more Manchester grads will teach English abroad with Fulbright scholarships as the College’s total reaches 22 Fulbrights – continuing its leadership among Indiana higher education for these prestigious government recognitions of scholarship, ability and service. Students train in difficult dialogues Students listened and respectfully responded to sometimes uncomfortable viewpoints offered by Ralph Nader, the president of the ACLU, the U.S. Speaker of the House, conservative pundit Bay Buchanan, and experts in bioethics, drug pricing and balancing security with civil liberties. National ranking promotes MC value Manchester climbed to No. 3 in the Midwest for value in the highly regarded College Guide rankings of U.S. News & World Report. “The higher the quality of the program and the lower the cost, the better the deal,” reported the magazine. Our recruiters shared the rating with prospective students and their parents. Students take compelling stand for College Manchester students drew high praise for their convincing arguments as they lobbied state legislators for more funding and technology for higher education. Students asked tough questions when Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels visited campus for a chat with 130 students and President Switzer. “Find Your Place” marketing campaign touches all An engaging, enrollment-focused marketing campaign tells the College’s stories from the hearts of students, faculty and staff. In their own words, students are saying they are finding side-by-side learning with faculty, friends for life, academics that matter, and success at Manchester College. Service: It’s in our mission Students, faculty and staff amassed a record 20,000 hours of service … in their communities and undeveloped countries, and for their College, their churches and organizations. Our Indiana Reading Corps team leads the state in student participation. Robert Graham MD 12 JULY 1, 2006 THROUGH JUNE 30, 2007 Giving with Purpose: Friends and Career Success ark and Anita Weaver Sherman donate for several reasons, but the 1979 accounting majors put the obvious worth of their investment first: Watching the campus improve because their giving inspires them to give more – in money and of their time. They also want to give others the valuable training for the real world they received at Manchester College. “We were extremely well-prepared for our careers,” says Anita, one of CPA Magazine’s Top 100 Most Influential Practitioners and chair of the Indiana CPA Society. (She is a partner in the Indianapolis CPA firm Greenwalt Sponsel & Co.) Mark, working outside his major as a benefit consultant, agrees. “We went to school as accounting majors, but the farther we got from campus, the more we realized that the non-accounting stuff was just as valuable.” And, they give to honor the lifetime friendships they made at Manchester. “We were and are very close to our classmates,” says Anita, noting the couple’s annual Labor Day reunions with those dear friends of 27 years. “That amazes people we know who came from large schools – the closerelationship impact,” says Mark. You can’t buy friendship, but the Shermans want to give others the chance to find it as they did. The couple gives generously … to scholarship funds for accounting students, The Manchester Fund and soccer trips, and Mark helps guide the College as a member of the Board of Trustees. The 1994 grads continue to thrive from the mentoring and excellence of their professors. “I’ve tried to pattern myself like (history Professor Emeritus) David Waas in the classroom,” says David, an assistant professor of history at Harper College. His MC mentor, history Professor Emeritus Jim Bishop, “is one of the smartest men I’ve ever known. I learned more just sitting in his office chatting than in any classroom.” Kristin uses her psychology degree as a human resources information systems analyst for Elgin Community College. Psychology Professor Robert Pettit “gave lectures that had a way of drawing you into the subject matter because they were highly informative, but also really fun,” recalls Kristin. Both took full advantage of the College’s opportunities, especially “amazing” January sessions, intramurals and as resident assistants. Cheerleading and choir set Kristin on an early path of representing her College. The couple married in Petersime Chapel, and have a son. “We have very fond memories of Manchester because it has brought us to where we are today,” says Kristin. “We’d like to give someone else the chance to experience what we did,” adds David. They are giving that opportunity, now and in the future! In addition to contributions to The Manchester Fund, which helps pay MC’s excellent faculty, the Richmonds are the youngest members of the Otho Winger Society of donors who include the College in their estate plans. I gained preparation for life, and an attitude of volunteer service and involvement.” Upon graduation, Dave found himself wellequipped for law school and as a CPA who would earn state recognition. Today, despite a demanding schedule as executive vice president and chief operating officer of Do it Best Corp., Dave commits contagious leadership to Manchester College. “These are exciting times,” he loves to exclaim, grinning widely as he leads by example … • helping establish The Accounting Alumni Association Scholarship Fund, an endowment that today exceeds $600,000 • chairing the Board of Trustees and a presidential search committee • helping raise the last $1 million that pushed College Union fundraising “over the top” to an amazing $72 million “In a sense, we never left the College,” Dave says. Sandy adds: “Manchester has provided us with so much, it’s easy to give back.” “We see a very bright future for Manchester College,” says Dave. “You look to the culture, the mission of the College of faith, learning and service … we have a fantastic campus, a place that serves today’s student as well – or even better – than when Sandy and I were there. “You see that mission in every faculty and staff member. The campus has changed, but the commitment to values and service … it’s alive and well. “That’s been the inspiration for us. Manchester is our first priority. It always has been.” By Jeri S. Yes, the names of Dave ’73 and Sandy Cleveland ’74 Haist appear elsewhere on campus: on plaques in Wine Recital Hall and the Science Center, on donor rolls, on dedication programs, and as a member of the Board of Trustees. But this gift of Haist Commons is especially exciting for the northern Indiana couple who remember their College days when students gathered at the union to eat, meet, get their mail … and perhaps fall in love. “This Union must be the heartbeat of campus,” says Sandy, who studied home economics at Manchester, taught, raised their family and returned for a degree in computer science. (Now, she teaches Introduction to Computers at MC.) She is thrilled that students are finding their space in the booths, The Oaks and the commons of this new College Union, and are interrupting the solitude of internet chat for face-to-face connections and experiences with friends, faculty and staff.
