First guided park walk of the season to take place this Saturday
New City, NY – The 2009 guided park walks will begin again this March. To welcome spring and the warmer weather, consider getting some physical activity with friends and family while exploring Rockland’s vast park system. The first walk will take place at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 14th at Kennedy Dells Park in New City. The one to two hour walk will be led by Frank Kemmer, a seasoned Rockland County Trail Guide Docent, who will take participants on an informative nature walk. As a naturalist, he will discuss bird migration, the natural environment, habitat diversity, and other points of interest. Kennedy Dells Park is located at 355 North Main Street in New City next to Street Community Center. Walkers should meet in the parking area. Participants should wear proper footwear (close-toed sturdy shoes such as walking shoes/boots or sneakers) and clothing, and bring water and sunscreen. Walks are sponsored by the Rockland County Division of Environmental Resources, the Rockland County Youth Bureau’s AmeriCorps program and the Rockland County Department of Health’s Steps to a Healthier Rockland program. Some other walks scheduled for spring are: • Sunday, March 22nd - Kennedy Dells in New City at 11 a.m. 1.38-miles loop/moderate walk. This is a fitness walk and will stop at the stations along the parks ParCourse Trail. • Saturday, March 28th - Sterling Forest in Tuxedo Park in Orange County at 10 a.m. 4.0-miles loop/moderate walk with some steep grades. The Fire Tower Hike will last 2-3 hours. • Saturday, April 18th – Tallman Mountain State Park in Sparkill at 10 a.m. 4.5-miles loop/moderate to vigorous walk. Enjoy a morning with nature and pack a lunch for a picnic overlooking the Hudson River. • Sunday, April 19th - Greenbrook Sanctuary in New Jersey at 9:15 a.m. Special Event! Guided Walk / Page 2 • Saturday, April 25th - Demarest Kill Park in New City at 10 a.m. 0.36-mile loop/easy walk. This special family-friendly walk will provide healthy snacks, feature Sparkle the Clown, and include additional fun activities for children.
