Guided group walk at Sterling Forest® State Park this Saturday, June 28th
New City, NY - A guided group walk will take place at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 28th at Sterling Forest® State Park, accessible from the village of Tuxedo Park in Orange County. This moderate, lakeside walk is 4.0 miles, perfect for the weekend hiker. Sterling Forest® State Park comprises 17,953 acres of nearly pristine natural refuge amidst of one of the nation's most densely populated areas. The park is a watershed for millions and a tremendous outdoor recreation area. This unbroken deep-forest habitat is important for the survival of many resident and migratory species, including black bear, a variety of hawks and songbirds and many rare invertebrates and plants. Hunting, fishing and hiking opportunities are also available. Other walks scheduled for this year include: Saturday, July 12th – Demarest Kill Park in New City 0.36-mile loop/easy walk. A great walk to bring the dog or for new park walkers. Saturday, August 16th- Monsey Glen Park in Monsey 0.57-mile loop/moderate walk. View remnants of Indian shelters. Sunday, September 7th – Clausland Mountain Park in Upper Grandview 0.92-mile loop/moderate walk. Make walking a family affair this Grandparent’s Day. Saturday, October 11th – Kakiat Park in Montebello 0.95-mile loop/moderate walk. Become an explorer like Columbus. Sunday, November 16th – Samuel G. Fisher Mount Ivy Environmental Park in Pomona 3.64 miles/easy walk. Experience fall foliage while walking along an old railroad bed. Walks are sponsored by the Rockland County Division of Environmental Resources, the Rockland County Youth Bureau’s AmeriCorps program and the Rockland County Department of Health’s Steps to a HealthierNY program. Please check the Steps to a HealthierNY website at www.rocklandsteps.org for any additional walks that may be added. Walks are free and pre-registration is not required. Guided Walks / Page 2 Walkers will meet in the parking lot across the street from the Visitor’s Center located at 116 Old Forge Road in Tuxedo Park. Directions: From Route 17N take the CR-72 ramp/Sterling Mine Road (just one mile passed Davis Sport Shop). Continue on CR72/Sterling Mine Road. Make a right onto Long Meadow Road (Route 84). Turn left onto Old Forge Road to the Visitor’s Center. Participants should wear proper footwear (close-toed sturdy shoes such as walking shoes/boots or sneakers) and clothing, and bring water and sunscreen.
