DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Provides professional medical services to patients/residents; May supervise subordinate staff; Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative Only) Examines, diagnoses and treats patients/residents for illness and injuries; Administers proper medications and immunizations as necessary; Instructs patients/residents on treatment and condition of illness or injury; Confers with other physicians and administrative staff regarding health problems of patients/ residents; May perform major/minor surgery; May authorize hospitalization, consultations, transfers, specialized tests, nur sing care, etc.; May be required to actively par ticipate in inspections from outside agencies and to attend various meetings as required. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thor ough knowledge of the principles and practices of professional medicine; ability to perform diagnostic services and treatment of patients/residents, and ability to use a variety of equipment in association with these services; verbal ability to communicate with patients, staff and the public; ability to supervise others, interest in maintaining a high standard of professional ethics; good pr ofessional judgment; conscientiousness and thoroughness; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: License to practice medicine in New York State.
