Under the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 1984 and the UWA Occupational Safety and Health Policy, Schools are obliged have in place provisions for identifying the training needs of staff, researchers and students and ensuring that appropriate training is provided.
Training Provided by the School
The School provides the following documented training schedules for staff, researchers and students: 1) Biological Safety Training – this is a prerequisite for anyone wishing to work in the PC2 Biological Laboratory. Training records are provided. 2) Chemical Safety Training – this is a prerequisite for anyone wishing to work in a Chemical Laboratory. Training records are provided. 3) Laboratory Safety Training – provides the minimum level of general safety awareness that individuals working in any of the School’s laboratories will require. This training is not specific to particular laboratories that have special safety requirements. Training records are provided. 4) Instron Safety Training – no person is permitted to use the Instron 8501 without first receiving safety training. Training records are provided. 5) Hand Tool Safety Training – this training is designed for individuals without a technical or workshop background. It provides demonstrations and hands on practical assessments for individuals needing to use electrical hand tools in the course of their work. Training is currently available for angle grinders, routers, jigsaws and drills. Training records are provided. 6) Student Manufacturing Laboratories – this training is provided to students attending Manufacturing Laboratories. Training is offered on: Lathe (3-jaw chuck) Lathe (4-jaw chuck) Workshop Practice
Training records are provided. 7) Laser Safety Training – no person is permitted to work with a Class 3B or higher laser without completing a half day Laser Safety Course. Training records are provided.
