Wanted: Volunteers to Help Prepare Victoria for a Disaster

VICTORIA, BC — The Victoria Emergency Management Agency (VEMA), Victoria’s resource for helping the community to be prepared for an emergency, is looking for volunteers. Volunteering with VEMA means being part of the action - whether it’s assisting evacuees, providing emergency radio and operations support, or educating the community on what it will take to cope for three days or more following a disaster.
The public and the media are invited to learn more about volunteer opportunities with VEMA at an upcoming Recruitment Fair. Complimentary hot dogs and beverages will be served. Registration is not required. Volunteers must be 19 years of age or older and undergo an annual criminal record check. The Victoria Emergency Management Agency is responsible for training City staff, coordinating an emergency response in the event of a disaster, and empowering citizens on how to be “emergency prepared.” This year, VEMA launched two “Recipes for Disaster” designed to help the community stock up on the knowledge, basic supplies, and a plan to protect themselves and their loved ones.
