					                     Multimedia 20/30—Animation Project
  Follow this outline if you want to learn to animate in Flash and create your 30-second animation using your own,
                                                  original, characters


Lesson 1—Flash drawing practice
1) Start Macromedia “Flash”
2) For additional help:
   a) Go to “Help, Getting Started with Flash, Flash Basics” and read through the material that you think is
        useful
        i) In particular, you should read up on Flash‟s basic drawing tools

Lesson 2—Drawing a cartoon character—first assignment—tips…
3) CREATE A SIMPLE CARTOON CHARACTER OF YOU OWN DESIGN, THEN CONVERT IT TO A
   SYMBOL
   a) Here is some basic advice on drawing cartoon characters:
      i) Make it something you like—if you don‟t love your kid, no one else will!
      ii) Keep it simple!
      iii) Add some colour, but only after you have completed your basic design
   b) A very simple series of drawings can be found at:

      ii) I also have copies of the Edmonton Journal comics that might be of interest, idea-wise
      iii) We also have copies of basic head, body, torso, and limb shapes on the „t-notes‟ drive that you can
           assemble into a basic character

   a) DUPLICATE YOUR CHARACTER SYMBOL, THEN MODIFY IT BY ADDING ANIMATION,
        USING ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING TECHNIQUES:
        i) A shape tween
        ii) A motion path
        iii) A frame-by-frame animation

Lesson 5—Combining Backgrounds and Characters
7) Suggestions for creating a background for your character…
   a) The scene should have at least two of the following:
       i) Horizon
       ii) Middle distance
       iii) Foreground
   b) Each of these should be on a different layer
8) Suggested exercise:
   a) PRODUCE A SIMPLE BACKGROUND SET USING MULTIPLE LAYERS, AND ADD YOUR
       SYMBOLS TO THE BACKGROUND ON THEIR OWN LAYERS
       i) Import one of your animation symbols, and combine these two elements to produce a short movie
            (1) You are trying to make your animation move against a background. Depending on the scene, you
                may want the background to move, as well
            (2) Make sure you use layers!

11) A quality 30-second animation project using an original character or characters in Flash, with a background,
    should also include the following:
    a) A recognizable story line, message, or theme
    b) A title
    c) Credits at the end
    d) Sound effects
    e) At least 2 Flash animation techniques
        i) Tweening of shape, colour, rotation, or size
        ii) Motion tweening
        iii) Motion guide path
    f) At least 2 basic animation techniques
        i) Squash/stretch
        ii) Exaggeration
        iii) In-betweening
        iv) Anticipation
        v) Arcs
