You likely have the right to collect unemployment benefits from the government if you have lost your
job through no fault of your own. These steps will take you through what is required to collect
unemployment benefits while you're out of a job.

 1. For this kind of insurance, it is important to find out if you qualify. The federal programs make the
unemployment benefits possible and there are strict guidelines and laws to follow. You will find that
eligibility requirements vary from state to state, so be sure to research the one you are residing in.
You'll need to have no other money coming in from when you file and afterwards, and have to have
worked a certain number of hours to collect unemployment benefits. You cannot have any previous
claims in the last 12 months and the reason for your job loss cannot be your fault. Your own state will
have
 particular eligibility requirements.

 2. You will want to understand exactly what creates a disqualified status. Unemployment benefits are
not supplied under certain reasons. Some of these reasons are if you quit, got fired, resigned, or left
your job. If you work for yourself you may find it a challenge in getting benefits you would normally get
if you worked for a corporation. Investigate what defines disqualification instead of just thinking you will
be eligible for employment insurance.

 3. Learn the ways that the programs work. Benefits can be collected up to a max. of six months (26
weeks) in the majority of states. If there is a lot of unemployment, your state could permit extra weeks.
You will receive half of your regular earnings, up to a particular dollar amount. In the majority of states
that range is between two hundred dollars and four hundred fifty dollars. Unemployment benefits are
taxed and considered as income like regular wages, so you will have to report your earnings on your
income tax for the year.

 4. File your claim right away. It is beneficial for you to explore the filing process for unemployment
directly upon losing your position. Your claim is only considered after a certain waiting period. If you
qualify, you will get your first check in about three weeks. Get the claim going as early as you can by
visiting the Benefits office. They will ask you to have your social security number, address, telephone
number and contact details (names/addresses) of previous employers also.

 5. Make sure you file any reports within the required time. If you want to receive continuous
unemployment benefits, then it will be mandatory to file reports on job seeking on a weekly or twice
weekly basis. Be on time to avoid losing money.

 6. Pick up your check. Your first unemployment check should be received two weeks after filing your
claim. Some places you don’t have to go through a waiting period of 1-2 weeks, in which time you don’t
get paid. After this hiatus, you can start claiming your benefits. You can arrange to get a direct bank
payment, or you can get your unemployment check mailed to you.

6 Ways to Survive a Recession
                                                                   By Tom Tosun

According to a news release by the Bureau of Labor, the nation's unemployment rate as of June 2009
remains at 9.5%. If you're like me and are in that number too then you're definitely feeling this
"recession". But it might not be as bad as it seems. Here are a few things you can do to survive.

1-Collect Unemployment

There are so many people out there who've been laid off from work who aren't collecting
unemployment. The reason for some could be that for them there is a negative stigma to the idea of
unemployment. This is a situation where their pride is hurting them. For others it could be that they
don't feel an unemployment check would be enough for them since it is only a fraction of what their
salary was.

The truth is that unemployment is something that your employer paid into for you when you were
working for him/her. That money is yours and should be claimed without fear or reservation. Sure it
may only be a fraction of what your salary was but it’s still income and believe me it will help.

2-Go Back to School

You’re probably thinking how you can go back to school if you don’t have any money, right? Well there
are government grants available for folks collecting unemployment. You can contact your local
unemployment office for details. They are more than willing to help folks in your situation.

3-Take A Contract Job

Hook up with a recruiter in your industry and have them look for contract positions for you while you’re
looking for something more permanent. Doing a few contract jobs here and there will definitely bring in
a little more than your unemployment check and one might even turn into a permanent position.

4-Change Your Career

Ever wanted to start your own business? Perhaps work from home? This might be the perfect
opportunity to start a home based business doing something you’ve always wanted to do or to even
try. There are also grants available for people looking to start their own small business. The
possibilities here are only limited by your desire and imagination.

5-Volunteer

Volunteering for something you believe in is probably the most rewarding experience one could have.
Helping others in need and selflessly giving will put you in a positive mood and feed your emotions.
You can volunteer for almost anything. From soup kitchens to helping your church to firefighting. And
just imagine how that might look on your resume if you do decide to pursue another job.

6-Build Your Personal Relationships

                                                Presented by Daniel Toriola

This is perhaps the most rewarding thing you can do with your new found time. Take the time to really
work on your personal relationships whether it be with your spouse or significant other, your kids, your
neighbors, distant family members or whomever.

I hope you’ve found this article helpful and you have some idea of the direction you’ll be going in
during your time “off” from work.
