MINOR PROGRAM IN ARCHITECTURAL STUDIES FACULTY OF COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE (formerly GENERAL STUDIES) The Minor in Architectural Studies (ARST) is designed as a pre-professional degree option for those students wishing to pursue the Master of Architecture (MArch) program at the University of Calgary, or other related graduate programs. The Minor in Architectural Studies includes courses equivalent to the architectural component of the first year of Faculty of Environmental Design's four year Master of Architecture professional degree program; classes in the Minor program are shared with first year students in the MArch program. Architectural Studies may be taken as a Minor in degree programs in the Faculties of Communication and Culture (formerly General Studies), Fine Arts, Humanities, Science, Management and Social Sciences. Completion of the Architectural Studies Minor Field does not guarantee admission to the Master of Architecture Program or other degree programs in the Faculty of Environmental Design. For students intending to apply to the Faculty of Environmental Design, the shortest route is to take the Minor as part of a three year non-major Bachelor of General Studies (BGS). Students with a preprofessional degree, including the Minor in Architectural Studies, who are admitted to the Faculty of Environmental Design may proceed directly to the second year of the MArch program. This means that a professional Master of Architecture degree can be obtained in six years after graduation from high school. The Minor also provides a good foundation for students planning to study other designrelated programs offered at the University of Calgary or elsewhere. Applicants to the Minor in Architectural Studies must have completed at least 4 full course equivalents, therefore, students would normally apply at the end of their first year of university. Holders of diplomas such as those from institutes of technology will receive 5 full course credits towards a non-major (three year) Bachelor of General Studies, this would include transfer credit for some of the Minor courses. In first year of the three year BGS, students planning to apply for Architectural Studies have to designate an interim Minor. ARST Courses Enrollment in ARST courses is limited to students admitted to the Minor in Architectural Studies. There are nine required courses (totaling 5 full course credits) in the Minor, they comprise the following: 1. Architectural History and Building Science Courses Students admitted to the Minor may take the following courses as early as second year and may wish to take them as early as possible to facilitate scheduling courses required to meet degree requirements other than the Minor. ARHI 425 is offered in odd-numbered years, in even-numbered years ARST 457.02 is offered. Students are required to take two of the three architectural history courses. ARST 449 ARST 457.01 ARST 457.02 or Building Science and Technology I (half course: Fall) History of Architecture and Human Settlements I (half course: Winter History of Architecture and Human Settlements II (half course: Fall, evennumbered years)
ARHI 425
Architecture of the Western World Since 1900 (half course: Fall, oddnumbered years) (or an architectural history course approved by the coordinator of the ARST Minor Program (Note: Art History 201 and 203 are prerequisites to Art History 425).
2. Architectural Design and Co-requisite Courses The following interrelated studio courses must be taken together in the final year of undergraduate studies, studio space is provided in the Faculty of Environmental Design to accommodate students in these courses. Fall ARST 443 ARST 451 ARST 455 Winter ARST 444 ARST 453 ARST 461
Introductory Studio (half course) Graphics Workshop I (half course) Introduction to Design Theories (half course)
Architecture Studio II (full course equivalent in one semester) Graphics Workshop II (half course) Site Planning I (half course)
There are a number of Faculty of Environmental Design courses that students in the Minor program are eligible to take as elective courses (the Somerville Design Charrette Block Course, the Los Angeles Field Trip Block Course, or other approved elective), as long as they obtain the permission of the instructor. BGS Degree Requirements To develop a program of courses for the three year Bachelor of General Studies degree you are recommended to consult the University of Calgary calendar and/or an Undergraduate Program Advisor.
Maximum enrollment in the Minor Program is limited to 26 per year (however, currently the intake numbers are 16-20 students per year), this includes transfers from other institutions. Because many more qualified students apply for the Minor in Architectural Studies than can be accepted, it is wise to plan for alternative studies. Apart from the University of Calgary, there are nine other professional architecture programs in Canada: University of British Columbia, University of Manitoba, University of Waterloo, Carleton University, University of Toronto, McGill University, University of Montreal, University of Laval and Dalhousie University. All these programs now offer the Master of Architecture degree as a first professional degree, and have various pre-professional degree options. How to Apply Application to the Minor in Architectural Studies is made through the on-line registration system (if a University of Calgary student) or through the University's web-based application process if transferring from another university. The application deadline is April 1. Applicants must have completed 4 full course equivalents to be eligible. Transcripts must be received by June 30. Whatever the background
of applicants, a minimum grade point average of 3.0 is required for admission to the Minor, calculated based on the most recent 5 full course equivalents completed (4 or 4.5 full course equivalents if fewer than 5 full course equivalents have been completed). Transfer from other Degree Programs If they meet the requirements to complete their degree program at the University of Calgary, students may complete the first year or two of their degree program at another institution. For those completing first year elsewhere, there are no special requirements other than addressing the non-major BGS degree requirements. Prospective applicants planning to transfer into the year in which they would take the entire set of ARST courses would have to have completed courses required to meet the nonmajor BGS degree requirements. This requirement may be satisfied at another institution if the courses are deemed equivalent by the Coordinators of the Minor in Architectural Studies. In Alberta, equivalency is based on the Alberta Transfer Guide. Because the required course GNST 300 is available only at the University of Calgary, students transferring in after second year would have to complete it in the Spring session before or after third year.
