The vocational academy programme in media & communication

Multimedia Design AK

The present document sets forth the curriculum for the multi-media designer education
(AK) at the Business Academy of Information and Communication Technology. The curri-
culum has been drawn up in accordance with §8 of the educational statutory instruments,
see below.

The course of instruction for multi-media designers is a 2-year academic program.

The aim of the training is to qualify the graduate multi-media designer for being equipped
to perform the work of designing, planning, carrying into effect and managing multi-media
assignments and also to take part in the implementation, administration and maintenance
of multi-media productions.

The present curriculum will take effect at the start of the semester in August 2001 and will
be made available to the students, the external examiners, the Ministry of Education and
other interested parties. The present curriculum supersedes earlier versions and applies
to all the multi-media designer students at the Business Academy of Information and
Communication Technology at Copenhagen‟s Institute of Technology.

2. Rules and regulations for the educational program

 The educational program is to be regulated by the following rules and regulations,
which can be found on the homepage of the Ministry of Education: Statute no.
         1115 of December 29, 1997, no. 642 of June 30, 2000 pertaining to business
academy training (AK) within the sphere of media and communication (multi-
media designer AK), Statutory instrument no. 1021 of November 20, 2000, Statu-
tory instrument no. 513 of June 22, 1995 and no. 890. Statutory instrument no.
332 of May 25, 1993, Statutory instrument no. 280 of April 22, 1997, Statutory in-
strument no. 862, Statutory instrument no. 635 of June 30, 2000, Statutory in-
strument no.154 of March 6, 2000 and Statutory instrument no. 591 of June 23,
         2000.

The statues and statutory instruments are to be made available to the students at the in-
stitute and can also be found at the Internet site www.uvm.dk

3. The curriculum

The curriculum has been drawn up on the basis of the statutory instruments concerning
business academy training (AK) within the sphere of media and communication and the
masters curriculum, which has been worked out in detail by the nation-wide educational
committee for suppliers to the multi-media designer program of education.

The overall purpose of the curriculum is to convert the educational statutory instrument‟s
aims and framework into a more action-oriented arrangement of the educational program.

Moreover, the curriculum will provide the students and the institute‟s pedagogic and ad-
ministrative staff with an informative and easy to grasp instrument for the arrangement
and the implementation of the course of training and also to provide information about the
program of training to the external examiners, the enterprises and the graduates of sec-
ondary schools.

The curriculum will also take into consideration the requirement for information posed by
the ministry of education and other authorities, so that their supervisory obligations with
respect to the educational institution can be safeguarded.

In the curriculum the subjects are described in terms of goals, themes, ECTS-points and
evaluations. A more detailed description will be drawn up before every semester and will
be found in the current semester- and weekly-agendas.

The curriculum is continuously revised according to the requirements of the business
community. When there are significant changes in the curriculum, the students and the
businesses operating in the field are called into the discussion. Opinions are procured
from the chairmanship of external examiners. Other suppliers to the educational pro-
gram are to be oriented about the changes.

On the occasion of essential changes in the curriculum, interim rules are simultaneously
established.

In the present curriculum, we make certain reservations with respect to changes and de-
mands from the pertinent supervisory authorities.

Institute of Information and Communication Technology

4. Admission requirements and exemption

The requirement for admission to the multi-media designer program of education (AK) is
a relevant business degree or a qualifying degree.

In addition, the following must be accounted for in a motivated application:
     Work experience
 High school education, experience abroad and/or volunteer work
 Basic familiarity with working with a computer

The institute can award credit for educational elements gained at another institution of
higher learning.

4.1 Exemption
The institute can grant an exemption from the aforementioned admission requirements if
it is assessed that the student will be capable of completing the studies in the prescribed
period of time. The student‟s qualifications are evaluated during an introductory interview.
Application for exemption must be submitted to the institute no later than March
15/November 15, with respect to admission at the beginning of the desired semester of
study.

5. Leave of absence

It is possible to apply for a leave of absence from the course of study when the request is
grounded in childbirth or illness, whether it be the student or anyone in his/her immediate
family who is sick. The director of studies must be contacted, and a written application
must be submitted. The institute will review the applications and inform the applicant
about the decision no later than three weeks after it is submitted. During the leave of ab-
sence, the student may not take part in instruction within the area of the program in ques-
tion. During any semester when the student has been on leave, he or she may not
present him/herself at examinations and/or tests within the pertinent field of study.

6. The educational program’s scope and duration

The multi-media designer education is a full-time program that has been standardized to
2 years of student work, corresponding to 120 ECTS-points. One “student‟s work in one
year” is gauged as the work a full-time student can be expected to accomplish in a year.
The course of instruction is divided up into 4 semesters, each of which is comprised of a
scope corresponding to 30 ECTS-points (European Credit Transfer System). What this
means, among other things, is that fields of study are described with respect to content
and also with respect to duration / study load.

7. Qualifications - and job profiles

The multi-media designer education is aimed at qualifying the students to be able to in-
dependently perform and carry out work assignments in the sector of business life en-
compassing the field of media and communications. The primary task for a multi-media
designer will be to assist different types of enterprises with communicating via digital
communication. The multi-media designer education sets it sights, then, on jobs in all
types of business and branches that have the need to communicate with the surrounding
world through the means of digital media.

Tasks within the multi-media designer‟s area of expertise can range from the production-
oriented (product development assignments) to the process-oriented (management
tasks). In the production-oriented area of expertise, the multi-media designer can perform
tasks such as concept development, design, programming, implementation and the main-
tenance of a digital communications‟ product. In the area of process-oriented expertise,
Page 5 Curriculum Multimedia Design
Institute of Information and Communication Technology

the multi-media designer can perform tasks such as planning, management and the im-
plementation of production. Above and beyond this, the multi-media designer‟s strengths
lie in communications planning and the drafting of communications strategies.

8. Forms of learning and forms of working

The course of training is characterized by assigning a weighty priority to project proce-
dure and group work. With the project-organizing procedure, the students gain important
experiences with problems and with solving problems together with a group. Accordingly,
both process and method remain part and parcel of the grounds for evaluation at the
tests and the examination.

The instruction takes place primarily in open learning environments where there has been
an overhaul of the ordinary division of disciplines, classroom teaching and the traditional
role of the teacher. The learning environment is organized with flexible high-tech teaching
„islands‟, where the students and the instructors come together in the cross-disciplinary
problem solving of projects and assignments.

An important prerequisite for the implementation of the course of study is the individual
student‟s active participation in the instruction, the project work and the tutorial/guidance
discussions. It is expected of the student that he/she assume responsibility for his/her
own pace of learning. This calls for motivation and commitment, independence, resource-
fulness and drive and an ability to take up a critical stance. It is necessary to take an ac-
tive part in the arrangement of one‟s own work – especially during the project phases.

Institute of Information and Communication Technology

The product must be approved by the teachers of the subjects Interaction development
and Visualisation and concept development before the student can enter for the exami-
nation.

The project report including annexes must not exceed 20 pages + 10 pages per group
member and makes up the foundation and the starting point of the examination. The stu-
dent must plan an individual presentation of 5 minutes duration followed by a 25 minute
individual oral examination carried out by the examiner.

At the examination the emphasis is on one of the following subjects:
      1) Market communication
      2) Strategy development

One joint grade is given. When assessing the report, the amount of disposal calendar
time for the project will be taken into consideration..

At the end of the 3rd semester: 2nd & 3rd external exam

The exams must document that the graduation level has been reached. The two exams
must between them cover/document two thirds of the programme cf. the executive order.
The starting point of both exams are one or more projects resulting in a product as well
as a report. The projects are carried out in groups of 2-4 students. The exam at the end
        nd
of the 2 semester must be passed before the student can enter for the examinations at
                rd
the end of the 3 semester.

2nd exam Interaction development
This exam is an individual oral exam. The subject for the examination is Interaction de-
velopment. Product examples from former projects which have formed the basis for pre-
vious examinations may be used by the candidate in the exam. Which products the can-
didates may use must be arranged prior to the exam. The exam is carried through with
 30 minutes of preparation and 30 minutes of examination
 A theoretical question from the field is drawn by the student, who must ac-
count for the question and may involve product examples when doing so.

3rd exam Visualisation and concept development
This exam is a group project exam. The project group must start of with a presentation of
maximum 15 minutes duration of a product from one of the previous projects that have
formed the basis for examination. This is followed by an individual examination taking the
starting point in the report with maximum 15 minutes per student.
One joint, individual grade is given.

At the end of the 4th semester: 4th external exam - Final exam project

The final exam project must along with the 2 exams after the 3rd semester document,
that the student has reached graduation level. In the exam project the student must
document verbally as well as in writing the ability to systematically and analytically carry
out problem solving as well as carry out theory and practice in a wide coherent profe-
sional perspective.
The exam project is solved individually or in groups of normally 2-4 students. Con-
cerning this point, the college arrives at a decision in concert with the individual student.
The subject for the final exam project is worded by the student(s) in concert with the col-
lege on the basis of the specially studied subjects and if possible in collaboration with a
company. The final exam project must result in a project report and possibly a product.
The product may be an application, an analysis/examination or something similar. The
project report and any product must be handed in to the college in 4 copies three weeks
before the programme is completed. If the exam project is carried out in a group, the re-
port and any product must have a form that makes individual assessment possible. The
report including annexes must not exceed 30 pages + 15 pages per group member.
The oral exam is an individual exam. In case the exam project has been car-
