5.   Purpose:

     A person credited with this unit standard must be able to identify and respond to
     factors, faults or incidents that increase the safety and security risk for staff and
     customers. The learner must be able to use all relevant technology and understand
     how maintaining a safe and secure working environment impacts on the succes of the
     organisation.

     In particular, on completion of this unit standard, the learner is able to:

         Implement the legislative and company procedures applicable to
          maintaining a safe working environment.
         Undertake actions in response to factors, faults or incidents that increase
          the safety risk for staff and customers.
         Follow company security regulations and procedures to maintain a safe and
          secure working environment
         Participate in preventative actions to avoid any breach of security including
          unauthorised access.
         Describe security procedures to avoid and/or handle violent situations


6.   Learning assumed to be in place:

     A learner undertaking this unit standard must already have:

           Competence in communication skills at NQF level 2 or equivalent.


7.   Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

     Specific Outcome 1:             Describe and implement the legislative and
                                     company procedures applicable to maintaining a
                                     safe working environment

      Assessment Criteria:

      1.1      Relevant legislative requirements and company procedures are described
               that pertain to the maintenance of a safe working environment
      1.2      Safety procedures are implemented for avoiding accidents in the workplace.
    1.3     Safety and evacuation procedures in the event of a fire are demonstrated in
            the context of a drill or exercise
    1.4     An outline is given of the adverse effects of failure to maintain a safe working
            environment for staff and customers


   Specific Outcome 2:             Undertake actions in response to factors, faults or
                                   incidents that increase the safety risk for staff and
                                   customers.

    Assessment Criteria:

    2.1     Procedures for contacting key staff are implemented along with actions to
            provide support in the event of an accident
[Range statement: Identify first aid officer, assistance within own area of responsibility,
      action plan; accident range: fall, faint, slip, dropped items, food/drink spills etc.].
    2.2     The appropriate equipment is identified and used for a given small fire.
    [Range statement: Extinguishers - Carbon dioxide, foam, powder, fire hose, fire
    blanket].
    2.3     Procedures are followed that are applicable in the case of a large fire.
    [Range statement: Raise alarm, evacuation procedures, and company procedures].
    2.4     Emergency situations are described where normal procedures would not be
    followed


   Specific outcome 3:             Follow   company security regulations and
                                   procedures to maintain a secure working
                                   environment.

    Assessment Criteria:

    3.1     Company procedures and legislative requirements are outlined that contribute
            to the maintenance of a secure working environment
    3.2     An explanation is given of the importance of a high level security and its
            impact on staff and customers
    3.3     Details are given on how different working areas are affected by a variety of
            security breaches.
            (Range statement: customer areas, staff areas and storage areas)
    3.4     Inspections are carried out for the purpose of checking that a high level of
            security is maintained in own area of responsibility


   Specific Outcome 4:             Participate in preventative action to avoid any
                                   breach of security

    Assessment Criteria:

    4.1     An overview is given of consequences to the company when security is
             compromised
    4.2     Security measures are described for both staff and customers to ensure that
            accepted security standards are communicated to all
    4.3     Steps are taken to ensure that customer and staff areas are clearly
            demarcated and secured against unauthorised access
    4.4     Suspicious items or persons are reported following the correct procedures

         Specific Outcome 5:            Describe security procedures to avoid and/or
                                        handle violent situations

      Assessment criteria:

         5.1      Hazardous areas are observed in line with security procedures
         5.2      Obvious violent situations like riots, strikes or mass action are avoided or
                  handled by fully explaining company procedures



8.       Accreditation and moderation:

            An individual wishing to be assessed against this unit standard (including through
             RPL) may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution
             accredited by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance body
             (ETQA), or one with an appropriate memorandum of understanding (MOU) with
             the relevant ETQA.
            Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an
             assessor with the relevant ETQA, or one with an appropriate MOU with the
             relevant ETQA.
            Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard,
             or assessing this unit standard, must be accredited as a provider with the relevant
             ETQA, or one with an appropriate MOU with the relevant ETQA.
            Moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA, or one with an
             appropriate MOU with the relevant ETQA.


9.       Range statement:

         If it is not possible to assess a learner’s responses to an actual fire, accident or other
         adverse incident, it can be arranged for this to be assessed in a simulated event.



10.      Notes:

      Embedded knowledge:

         The knowledge underpinning the above specific outcomes:

              Company procedures relating to accidents, hazards, safety officer, emergency
               signs and exits;
              Locations of all extinguishers, especially in own department;
              Types of fire extinguishers;
              Fire alarm and evacuation procedures;
              Hazards and potential hazards;



         Critical Cross-Field Outcomes:

         The following critical outcomes relate to this unit standard and will be elaborated
         upon within the learning context:

   Problem identification and solution in creative ways [identifying and responding
    to abnormal safety conditions in the work environment];
   Self-organisation in organising and managing self within the context of
    organisational transformation [awareness of and adherence to company safety
    procedures];
   Appropriate use of information technology equipment and systems [knowledge
    and use of different types of fire extinguisers];

Additionally, communication is established as an area of development in its own
right. Also, aspects of personal development feature throughout the achievement of
this unit standard.
