                                    Gog and Magog
We have probably all heard something of the terms ‘Gog’ and ‘Magog’ and associate
them with the ‘End Times’. There is much that is confusing, not least that there are 2
campaigns referred to as ‘Gog-Magog’ as part of the series of 3 End-Times battles!!

The First Gog-Magog Campaign
Ezekiel 38,39
Timing: Invasion of Israel from the north at ????? the time of the start of the Tribulation

Campaign of Armageddon (‘Har-Megiddo’ is the Mount of Megiddo)
Zechariah 12-14, Jeremiah 50 and 51, Joel 3, Isaiah 14, 63, Habakkuk 3, Matthew 24, 2
Thessalonians 2, Revelation 16-18
Timing: At the end of the Great Tribulation. This event heralds the Second Coming of
Yeshua and the beginning of the Millennium.

The Second Gog-Magog Battle
Revelation 20:7-10
Timing: This is the final battle which will take place at the end of the Millennium.

Over the next few weeks we’ll look at the three End Times campaigns but first we need
to understand the terms ‘Gog’ and ‘Magog’

Gog
Gog is a title for the ruler, as was ‘pharaoh’ in Egypt. Thus the term ’Gog’ does not
refer to anyone in particular but is a title for a leader as one might say ‘Sir’.

There are scanty references to the name of ‘Gog’ or ‘Og’.
1 Chronicles 5:4 as the name of a Reubenite ‘The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog,
and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras.’
Bullinger says that the name ‘Gog’ is connected with ‘Og’ and ‘Agag’.
Deuteronomy 3:1 ‘and Og the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people,
to battle at Edrei.’
Numbers 24:7 ‘He shall pour the water out of his buckets, and his seed shall be in many
waters, and his king shall be higher than Agag, and his kingdom shall be exalted.’

In the Book of Revelation, Gog and Magog appear to be inclusive term for the Gentile
nations. This reference would pertain to the second ‘Gog-Magog’ battle.
Revelation 20:8 ‘And will go out to deceive the Nations which are in the 4 corners of the
earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to the war, the number of whom is as the
sand of the sea.’

The first Gog-Magog campaign deals with an invasion of Israel from the north. Some
commentators are surprised that Babylon is not included and that Ezekiel never
mentioned the destruction of Babylon in his discourse of the foreign nations in Ezekiel 23
– 32. Of course it may be that is simply not part of God’s plan. However, one interesting
interpretation identifies ‘Gog’ in Ezekiel Ch 38, 39 as a cryptogram for Babel or
Babylon.1 The same source suggests that Gog was a symbol of the forces of Antichrist. If
the word Gog is from the Sumerian gug (darkness), that would be additional support for
treating him as a symbol of the prince of this world.

Magog
Gog, is the leader of the land of Magog. If Gog denotes all that is proud and powerful,
then ‘Magog’ denotes the same of the land and the people.

Genesis 10:2 ‘The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal,
and Meshech, and Tiras.’
Magog is mentioned as the first son of Japhet. Meshech and Tubal were provinces of
Asia Minor in an area associated with the Scythians. The geographical area would today
include parts of Iran, Turkey, and southern provinces of Russia.
