ABOUT LIFELINE/CHILDLINE WESTERN CAPE

LifeLine was founded in 1963 in Sydney, Australia, by the late Reverend Dr Sir
Alan Walker, after he received a call by a distressed man, who three days later
took his own life. Determined not to let loneliness, isolation or anxiety be the
cause of other deaths, Sir Alan launched a crisis line, which operated out of the
Methodist Central Mission in Sydney. Just a few days after it was first established,
LifeLine received over one hundred calls for help. LifeLine Southern Africa is part
of an international network, LifeLine International, with centres in 19 countries.
The organisation also belongs to the Volunteer Emotional Support Helplines
(VESH) network, along with service providers from 61 countries around the world.
LifeLine Southern Africa has 19 affiliated community centres spread throughout
South Africa, Botswana and Namibia.

LifeLine Southern Africa has just celebrated its 40 anniversary, having begun its
work in Cape Town in 1968. What started out as a crisis telephone counselling
service only, has now grown into a service that includes telephone and face-to-
face counselling, therapeutic work with children who have been sexually abused,
HIV & AIDS programmes, youth development programmes, trauma debriefing,
training courses, support groups and bereavement counselling. Today
LifeLine/Childline Western Cape receives about 4500 calls per month, and goes
some way to serve the emotional needs of communities in Cape Town, Wynberg,
Khayelitsha, Guguletu, Bishop Lavis, Athlone, Mitchell’s Plain and Eerste River.

LifeLine/Childline’s lay counsellors are trained volunteers from all walks of life.
They operate the crisis telephone lines 24 hours per day, every day of the year, as
well as offering face-to-face counselling at our centres during office hours. The
service is anonymous, confidential, free of charge and available to anyone with
access to a telephone or to any one of our centres.

In 1995, LifeLine Western Cape expanded its operations to include Childline. Full
time social workers provide long-term therapeutic work with children who have
been sexually abused or raped, and offer education and prevention programmes,
bereavement counselling and trauma debriefing.

LifeLine/Childline’s focus on social issues has ensured that it receives support for
its work from both government and the private sector. Our fundraising and
marketing departments focus their efforts on building partnerships with corporate
companies, trusts and foundations, government departments and the media.

Income is also generated through the many training courses offered. Seven
Personal Growth courses, followed by Counselling Skills courses, are offered
annually in Cape Town, Khayelitsha and Bishop Lavis.

LifeLine has been placed on the Micro-Provider listing by the HWSETA (Health
and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority) as a provider of training in
the areas of HIV/AIDS awareness, and Counselling.

PERSONAL GROWTH COURSE
AN EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING PROCESS

The way in which we function in everyday life is, to a large extent, dependent on
the quality of our relationships, be they family, social, business or community.

The relationship that we have with ourselves creates the depth and quality of our
interaction with others. Learning to accept, care for and develop that which lies
within us, results in continually improving communication with others. Enabling this
process of self awareness and learning, in order to empower our human potential,
is the goal of the LifeLine/Childline Personal Growth course.

THE TRAINING

The course consists of nine three-hour sessions held over 9 weeks.

Cape Town: One morning (9h30) and two evening courses (19h30)
Bishop Lavis: One afternoon (13h30) and one evening course (18h00)
Khayelitsha: Two afternoon courses (14h00).

All courses are based on the principles of Experiential Learning and participants
work in small groups, each one facilitated by a trained and experienced
LifeLine/Childline counsellor. The course is designed so that the week between
each session allows participants time to reflect on, and assimilate their learnings,
and to internalise new behaviour should they so wish. Each session will comprise
a variety of methodologies to provide optimum learning.

As each trainee has a unique contribution to make to the group, attendance at ALL
sessions is essential.

THE TRAINERS

The Personal Growth course is presented by a team of LifeLine/Childline
counsellors with experience in training, who are committed to empowering trainees
with enhanced life skills. The course is regularly adapted to remain relevant to
circumstances experienced in our rapidly changing society and is monitored by the
Training Manager and the LifeLine/Childline Training sub-committee.

                                                                                       3
COURSE CONTENT

The Personal Growth course is designed to look at how we relate to others and
ourselves. It offers opportunities for greater understanding.

Included in the topics covered are the following:

      Communication styles
      Life pressures & coping mechanisms
      Trust & self disclosure
The sexual dimension of our lives
The spiritual dimension of our lives
      Conflict handling
      Personal value systems
      Overcoming prejudice and discrimination
      Bereavement and loss
Relationships – in all their forms
      Giving and receiving feedback

A LifeLine training manual will be issued to each trainee.
Attendance certificates will be issued on request.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Anyone, over the age of 21, who has a sincere desire to gain greater self insight
and create better relationships with other people would benefit from this course.
The personal growth programme is also invaluable to people in the caring
professions, social science students and human resources staff.

It is a prerequisite for people who want to become counsellors for
LifeLine/Childline.

It is not ideal for people who have just had a major life event (trauma or
bereavement) to take part in these courses. This course is not group therapy. We
feel that individuals should honour their own process before coming on this course.
In this light, people who are in therapy should discuss their readiness with their
therapist. For those who are doing the courses in order to become LifeLine
counsellors, please note that in selection we would not consider someone who has
lost someone significant in the past year or someone in addiction recovery who
has not been clean for at least one year.

                                                                                    4
COUNSELLING SKILLS COURSE
LIFELINE/CHILDLINE’S APPROACH TO COUNSELLING

LifeLine/Childline is an organisation of skilled lay counsellors who are there to
assist callers facing a crisis in their lives. Its role is to create a safe space for
people to share what is happening in their lives. As its counsellors are non-
judgemental, empathic, caring and non-directive, callers are enabled to find their
own solutions. It is not LifeLine/Childline’s policy to impose the personal beliefs or
convictions of the counsellors on callers.

THE TRAINING
The Communication and Counselling Skills course consists of nine weekly
sessions of 3 hours each, offered mornings, afternoons and evenings. The course
is experientially based and trainees work in small groups facilitated by an
experienced LifeLine/Childline Counsellor. Regular practice of the skills as they
are acquired is built into the course. Trainees receive constant feedback on their
skills from fellow trainees, their facilitator and other LifeLine assessors. As each
trainee has a unique contribution to make to the group, attendance at ALL
sessions is essential.

PARTICIPANTS WHO MISS MORE THAN ONE SESSION, WILL NOT BE
CONSIDERED FOR SELECTION AS A COUNSELLOR. SHOULD TWO OR
MORE CONSECUTIVE OR MORE THAN TWO NON-CONSECUTIVE SESSIONS
BE MISSED, PARTICIPANTS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO CONTINUE THE
COURSE.

THE TRAINERS
All sessions of the Communication and Counselling Skills course will be presented
by a team of LifeLiners who have experience in counselling and training. The
course is monitored by the Training Manager and the LifeLine/Childline Training
sub-committee.

REQUIREMENTS
THE PERSONAL GROWTH COURSE IS COMPULSORY BEFORE
ATTENDANCE ON THIS COURSE AND THE COUNSELLING SKILLS COURSE
NEEDS TO BE DONE WITHIN A YEAR’S TIMEFRAME. IF MORE THAN ONE
YEAR HAS ELAPSED BEFORE EMBARKING ON THE COUNSELLING SKILLS
COURSE, THE PERSONAL GROWTH SECTION WILL NEED TO BE
REPEATED.

As part of the course, trainees will be expected to make 5 practice telephone calls
of about 30 minutes, and attend a compulsory Face to Face counselling session.
Two of the calls form part of the assessment process. If trainees go forward for
selection, 2 further calls need to be made.

Total = 7 calls:            5 calls + 2 calls (if going forward)

                                                                                      5
COURSE CONTENT
This course is designed to enhance communication skills and to develop the skills
required for effective counselling.
The following topics are covered:

       Observation skills
       Attending behaviour
       Self awareness
       Questioning techniques
       Reframing and interpretation
       Reflection of content and feelings
       Challenging and confronting
       Depth and spiritual counselling
       Giving and receiving feedback

A LifeLine training manual will be issued to each trainee
Attendance certificates will be issued on request.

WHO CAN ATTEND
This course is designed for people wanting to become LifeLine/Childline
counsellors and first preference is given to these trainees. The course is open to
those who wish to use these skills in their work or in the community. Trainees
must have completed the LifeLine/Childline Personal Growth course NO LONGER
THAN ONE YEAR before the start of the counselling skills course. Aspirant
LifeLine/Childline counsellors are required to undergo a selection procedure.

LIFELINE SELECTION PROCESS
During the course trainees will make a series of calls and receive feedback on
these calls. Trainees will counsel their facilitator and another LifeLine counsellor
(at home facilitator). These two calls will be assessed against specified criteria
and will form part of the assessment process. Feedback will be given after the call.

On completion of the course two more assessment calls will be given by LifeLine
counsellors. They will be assessed on the same criteria, but no feedback will be
given after the call.
Feedback may be requested after the selection interview.

The trainees book a time for selection interviews and are interviewed by a panel of
LifeLine counsellors following the end of the course. (See dates pg 10-14)

A file is compiled for trainees going through for selection, comprising of:
     Self assessments - part 1 and 2
     Group assessments - part 1 and 2
     Facilitator assessments - part 1 and 2
     Autobiography
 Application for membership and homework exercises
     4 practice call assessments
 1 practice face to face counselling assessment

                                                                                    6
One Panel member is required to review all information pertaining to the trainee
applicant. Other panel members meet the trainee applicant at the selection
interview, having no prior details.

On completion of the selection interview, the panel members are required to reach
an unanimous decision regarding the trainee’s suitability to join the
LifeLine probation programme.

The decision is based on the strength of the interview, the interaction assessments
given during the course and the LifeLine criteria for selection. If an unanimous
decision is not reached a selection review panel will evaluate the application.
The decision reached after the selection process is final.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR SELECTION
 sense of self and spiritual depth
 competency in LifeLine/Childline’s approach to counselling
 availability for regular volunteer counselling duties
 no loss of significant other in the past year
 those in addiction recovery, must have been clean for at least one year

Trainees selected are then invited to serve a period as probationers and are
required to counsel regularly under supervision for seven months. In this time on-
going compulsory training on specific topics is offered. During the probation
period, probationer counsellors are assessed with regard to their development.

There is a final selection process before counsellors complete their probation
period. The probation period terminates for successful probationers with a
dedication ceremony during which the LifeLine/Childline pledge of service is taken.

LIFELINE/CHILDLINE’S EXTERNAL TRAINING

LifeLine/Childline has become increasingly known for the effectiveness of its
training. Workshops and training courses have been designed specifically to meet
the needs of business, community, welfare and religious organisations, as well as
local government structures. Educational institutions are catered for, from primary
to tertiary levels.

In 1998 a Youth Programme was created to address the needs of youth in schools
and in the community. Training of peer counsellors has taken place in a number of
schools in Cape Town and in the Boland region.

LifeLine/Childline specialises in communication and counselling skills training, and
has also offered training in team building, post traumatic stress management,
assertiveness development, motivational and change management, self esteem
and awareness and general life skills. There has been a growing request for
training regarding managing substance abuse.

The increase in violence in our society has led to an enormous demand for
workshops on child abuse and family violence. Parenting skills and the needs of
women and children continue to receive increasing attention.

LifeLine/Childline is involved in HIV and AIDS training in the workplace and

Following Peer Counsellor training, the Youth Development Department assists schools in
setting up a Peer Counsellor programme which encourages teenagers to speak to and
support each other when they have problems.
Each course, or workshop is designed to meet the specific needs of the school, or youth
group and can be presented at a time and venue suitable to the participants and trainers.

THE TRAINERS
The courses are presented by “Adolescent Trainers”, who, as full-time staff
members, or LifeLine/Childline counsellors, have completed the LifeLine/Childline
courses and have been trained as presenters and facilitators.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
The courses are available to all teenagers who could benefit from greater self-insight and
an increased understanding of their life experience as they enter young adulthood. The
Peer Counselling Course is aimed specifically at teenagers wishing to become peer
counsellors at their school or in their youth group.
Minimum number of trainees per course is 20, unless otherwise discussed and arranged
with the Youth Development Manager.
