                                There’s a woman in Burundi
Who’s left her home without prior warning
The cooking pots and food abandoned mid preparation
The traces of her life disrupted
She carries with her the memories of her family - no time to say goodbye
She is the target of ethnic insecurities

There is a woman in the Congo
                              She flees dodging rebel soldiers
She leaves her child wrapped hanging from a tree
                                  She hides escaping rape
She returns her child half eaten by vultures hanging from a tree
She is the target of political discord

There is a woman in Northern Uganda
Who makes her way South despite rumours of peace
She travels by bus, by boat, by foot
She gives her body in exchange for assistance
while holding the memory of the child she has left behind
She escapes lions and raging crocodiles as she travels south
She is the target of brutal masculinity

There is a woman in Zimbabwe
Who is promised a job to secure her livelihood, her future
She packs her belongings and leaves her home
                                She reaches her destination
                                   Her relative meets her
                                  He arranges her papers
He holds them in his possession
She is dispatched to the streets to secure his livelihood, his future
                                Trafficked by her own man
She is the target of dictatorship

There is a woman in South Africa
Who does not welcome the woman from Somalia, Burundi, Congo, Northern Uganda,
                                          Zimbabwe
She assumes she’s here to steal her job, to lure her man
She refuses to accept her as a sister of the same soil
She is the target of racial division poisoned by xenophobic attitudes

There are women from Somalia, Burundi, Congo, Northern Uganda, Zimbabwe, South
                                         Africa
These women are targets, pawns in the patriarchal playing field of politics
