Basic enlistment requirements:

Young South African men and women who are:

        Physically and mentally healthy
        Law abiding citizens who have not been found guilty of a criminal offence (particulars of any pending criminal prosecution
         must be declared)
        Between the ages of 18 and 30 (Reservists 18-35)
         (Active Reservists will be considered based on the motivation from the relevant Provincial Commissioner)
        In possession of a Matric/Senior Certificate (Grade 12 certificate) (Applicants with a degree or diploma may receive
         preference)
        Proficient in at least two of the official languages, of which one must be English
        Qualify to participate in the recruitment and selection process for entry-level members in the South African Police Service
         (SAPS)
        In possession of at least a light vehicle driver’s licence. Applicants without driver’s licences, who comply with all the
         requirements referred to above, may also apply. It is intended to include a maximum of 10% of applicants without driver’s
         licences in the allocation for the January 2009 Basic Training Learning Programme. It will be expected from these
         successful applicants to obtain a light vehicle driver’s licence before expiry of the probation period.
        Within the prescribed Mass and Height restriction. Applicants applying should without shoes, not be shorter than 1.60 m
         for Males and 1.55 m for Females. BMI (Body Mass Index) less than 30. BMI is determined by WEIGHT(kg) / HEIGHT

           (m), for instance:
         84kg / 1.75 x 1.75 (height)
         84 ÷ 3.06 = 27.45

All applicants will be subjected to a fitness, psychometric and medical evaluation and will be interviewed during the recruitment,
selection and enlistment process. The SAPS will also verify the criminal record, qualifications, driver’s licence, citizenship and
residential address of each applicant.

                                             Basic Training Learning Programme

In view of the physical demands of the Basic Training Learning Programme, applicants with chronic conditions,
physical impairments and or any other health condition that would lead to the interruption of the Programme will be
excluded from participation. Successful applicants who develop any chronic condition, physical impairment and or any
other health condition that would lead to the interruption of the Programme, will be withdrawn. Selected applicants will
enter into a two-year contract for participation in the Basic Training Learning Programme offered by the SAPS that will
be presented over the following periods:

Year 1: Semester 1: (July to December 2009)
Six months of Basic Police Training, including Tactical Policing, at a designated SAPS Training institution. In addition
to the free accommodation, meals, training attire, equipment and material, trainees will receive a monthly stipend of
R1600.00 for incidental expenses. The Semester 1 training is strictly residential (full-time accommodation at the
Training Institution is compulsory).

Year 1: Semester 2: (January to June 2010)
Six months of Field Training at a designated police station, during which trainees will receive a monthly stipend of
R2500.00

Year 2: (July 2010 to June 2011)
A 12 month probation period during which trainees will receive on-the-job training at a designated police station or
unit. For the duration of Year 2, trainees will receive a stipend equivalent to salary level 3 (currently R58 995.00 per
annum).

During Semester 2 and Year 2, trainees will be responsible for their own accommodation, meals and transport.

In addition to the above stipends, trainees will receive medical aid benefits for the duration of the 24-month Basic
Training Learning Programme. Upon successful completion of the Basic Training Learning Programme trainees will
be considered for permanent appointment as members of the SAPS. Remuneration will be on the first notch of Band
A (currently R84 333.00 per annum). In addition to this, appointees will receive the applicable service benefits.

Core Functions: Successful candidates will serve as functional police officials. As such, they will be deployed to
carry out one or more of the following functions:
* Prevent, combat and investigate crime, * Maintain public order, * Protect and secure the inhabitants of the Republic
and their property, * Uphold and enforce the law
