CHOLERA Hygiene helps you to prevent Cholera WHAT IS CHOLERA? Cholera is a bacterial infection, which is contracted by drinking contaminated water or by eating food, which has been in contact with contaminated water, flies or soiled hands. The germs responsible for cholera are found in the stools of human beings. SYMPTOMS Profuse watery stools with or without vomiting. Rapid dehydration (caused by loss of body water). TO PREVENT CHOLERA Use only treated or boiled and cooled water. o To treat water Add 1 teaspoon of Bleach to 25 litres of water and allow to stand for 2 hours before use. o Boil water and allow to cool. Wash all raw food with treated or boiled and cooled water. Wash your hands before handling or eating food. Wash food utensils in treated or boiled water. Protect food from fly contamination and prevent fly contamination in your homes. Use proper toilet facilities, and wash hands after use. Sanitary disposal of faeces is essential. Do not allow children to play in dirty pools, rivulets or storm water outlets. Do not contaminate rivers or leave sewage where it can be washed into a river by rain. TREATMENT AND MANAGEMENT Give extra fluids in the form of sugar & salt solution. Make the sugar & salt solution by adding: 8 teaspoons of sugar plus ½ teaspoon of salt to 1 litre of water Give this solution in small sips as often as possible. IMPORTANT Go to your nearest Clinic, hospital or doctor. REMEMBER- Keep giving fluids while travelling to the clinic or doctor.
