• Fire Insurance Maps emerged in London in the
  late 1700s
• Industrialization & the rise of the insurance
  industry in America in the late 1800s fueled the
  need for mapping
• Fire insurance maps detailed developed areas
  of cities
• Insurance agents based rates on the relative risk
  of fires

      Sanborn Map Company
• Founded in 1867 by D.A. Sanborn
• Published a system of standards of
  accuracy in 1905
• Large and successful company, mapped
  12,000 U.S. towns and cities
• Remapped cities over time
