Protect Social Security
Barack Obama is committed to ensuring the long-term strength of Social Security, one of the
most successful government programs in our nation’s history. Obama is strongly opposed to
privatizing Social Security, and believes that one strong option to improve long-term solvency is
lifting the payroll tax cap on earnings above $250,000. Obama will make it a top priority of his
administration to protect Social Security benefits, and he does not believe it is necessary or fair
to hardworking seniors to raise the retirement age.
Eliminate Income Taxes for Seniors Making Less Than $50,000
Obama will eliminate all federal income taxes on seniors making less than $50,000 per year. This
will provide an immediate tax cut averaging $1,400 for 7 million seniors and will relieve millions
from the burden of filing tax returns.
Protect and Strengthen Medicare
Barack Obama is committed to the long-term strength of Medicare, a program that provides
health care to 42 million American seniors. He will reduce waste in the program and will enact
key reforms to improve the quality and efficiency of our healthcare system to improve patient
Reduce Prescription Drug Costs
Obama will help seniors get the medicine they need by closing the “doughnut hole” in the
Medicare prescription drug program. Obama will prevent drug companies from blocking cheap
generic medicines from the market, supports allowing the government to negotiate with drug
companies for lower drug prices in the Medicare program and will allow the safe reimportation
of prescription drugs from developed countries.
Provide Relief from High Energy Prices
Obama will increase funding for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program to help
low-income citizens — many of them seniors — pay their winter heating and summer cooling
bills. Obama has also called for the president to immediately provide another $20 billion in
stimulus tax rebates for families to pay rising energy costs.

Barack Obama will insist that companies keep the promises they have made to their employees.
