Health Care for America NOW!
There is nothing that impacts our economy and the lives of workers more than the cost of healthcare. Healthcare costs have been on a constant rise – and continue to grow. Without healthcare reform, the outlook is more of the same. We have to keep the pressure on our elected officials to do the right thing and support workers by supporting worker issues, including healthcare reform, better wages, better benefits, fairness on the job, and respect in the workplace. I urge you to continue the fight for positive change by calling, writing, and communicating with our elected officials. The Staff and I will continue to work hard to see that healthcare reform comes to pass, but we need your help in this fight. When you see your Union Representatives or me in your stores, plants, and work locations, please sign on to letters and petitions we will be delivering to our Senators and Congressmen. This fight is ours to win, and we must fight a good fight so we can claim Health Care for America NOW!

Seguro Medico Para América AHORA
No hay nada que impacte a nuestra economía y las vidas de trabajadores que el seguro medico. El costo del seguro medico a hestado en constante aumento y sigue creciendo. First Ever UFCW Nursing Home L.P.N.’s Organized in Arkansas
On May 28, 2009, an organizing campaign with Licensed Practical Nurses (L.P.N.’s) at Lake Village Healthcare Center, LLC, was started. The petition for election and a letter requesting voluntary recognition was sent to the facility on June 12, 2009. The request was denied at that time, and an election date was set for July 22, 2009; however, on July 15, 2009, the Union’s attorney called to confirm that the Company agreed to a card check to be held at the nursing home on July 16, 2009. The cards were verified on July 17, 2009, and Lake Village Healthcare Center sent via electronic and certified mail a letter to the National Labor Relations Board (N.L.R.B.), Region 26, voluntarily recognizing the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, Local 2008, as the exclusive collective bargaining representative of the 14 full-time and regular part-time L.P.N.’s at Lake Village Healthcare Center, as defined in the Stipulated Election Agreement. On July 20, 2009, a notification was posted at the facility giving 45 days to file a decertification petition. On August 21, 2009, the R.D. (decertification) petition was filed, because of the present law of the N.L.R.B. Recognition Bar that prohibits the N.L.R.B. from holding elections for a reasonable period up to one year. THIS IS WHY WE NEED TO GET OUR SENATORS, BLANCHE LINCOLN AND MARK PRYOR, TO SUPPORT THE EMPLOYEE FREE CHOICE ACT. On September 16, 2009, the election was held and won by the L.P.N.’s who cast their votes for UFCW Local 2008. This is the first L.P.N. unit in a nursing home that has been organized in the state of Arkansas or within Region 5 of the UFCW International Union. Trumka Takes Top AFL-CIO Post, Pledges Aggressive Movement
One-time coal miner Richard Trumka, Secretary-Treasurer of the AFL-CIO since 1995, was elected its President at the Union federation’s September convention. A powerful speaker and strong personality, he promised a more aggressive style than his predecessor, John Sweeney, and pledged to reach out to younger workers. “We need a unionism that makes sense to the next generation – young women and men who either don’t have the money to go to college or are almost penniless by the time they come out,” Trumka told hundreds of cheering delegates. He said he would meet head-on the challenge of rebuilding a labor movement that once represented 35 percent of American workers, but is down to just 12.4 percent today. He told delegates that the labor movement would lead the nation out of its economic mess, where millions work as temps, contractors, and home workers for low wages, no health care, and no job security. “Even though it wasn’t the labor movement that got us into this, we are the people who are going to lead America out of it,” he declared. “The American labor movement can turn our country around,” Trumka said, “and together that’s exactly what we’re going to do! We need a new kind of labor movement – one shaped to meet the needs of Americans in a changing economy. “We need a labor movement that’s not afraid of new ideas – and understands that nostalgia for the past is not strategy for the future,” he said. Elected along with Trumka were two women, SecretaryTreasurer Liz Shuler and Executive Vice President Arlene Holt Baker. Baker had served in the same position during the Sweeney administration. Shuler, 39, the youngest person ever to become an officer of the AFL-CIO, had been serving as the Executive Assistant to Electrical Workers President Edwin Hill. All three were elected by acclamation.

Crystal Lee Sutton Dies; Real-Life “Norma Rae”
Crystal Lee Sutton, the real-life “Norma Rae” of the movies, died of brain cancer September 11, 2009, at her home in Burlington, North Carolina. She was 68. Her dramatic story of trying to unionize her J. P. Stevens textile plant in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, became known to the world when the film “Norma Rae” was released in 1979. For legal reasons, Sutton’s real name could not be used, so the character played by actress Sally Field was named Norma Rae. Sutton – Crystal Lee Jordan, before her later marriage to Lewis Sutton – was a 33-year-old towel-folder at the plant, a mother of three earning $2.65 an hour, when she’d had enough of low pay and bad working conditions and started working with the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union (ACTWU). “Management and others treated me as if I had leprosy,” she later said in an interview for Alamance Community College in Graham, North Carolina, which she attended in the 1980’s. Sutton was fired for her union activities and management called police to haul her away, but she didn’t go quietly. “I took a piece of cardboard and wrote the word ‘UNION’ on it in big letters, got up on my worktable, and slowly turned it around,” she said in the interview. “The workers started cutting their machines off and giving me the victory sign. All of a sudden the plant was very quiet.” Within a year, the Union had won the right to represent 3,000 employees at seven plants in Roanoke Rapids, including J. P. Stevens. Sutton briefly returned to the plant, then worked for the Union during the organizing campaign. After 10 years with the Union, she earned certification as a nursing assistant. Sutton eventually ran a day care center in her home. — UCS News Service

For the countless hard-working families across the country suffering at the hands of our nation’s badly broken health care system, the health care bill now represents a decisive milestone in the fight to ensure access to quality, affordable health care for all Americans. It will ensure a strong public insurance option will make access to insurance more affordable for families and is financed in a manner that will not tax the middle class. It also will ensure responsibility from employers by making sure they pay their fair share and accountability from insurance companies so that they can no longer deny insurance to individuals with pre-existing conditions.
