2.    Composition/information on Ingredients

     Composition :                             50-55 % Phosphorous Pentoxide; 3% Sulphuric acid,
                                               2.5% magnesium sulphate
     Appearance :                              Brownish coloured viscous liquid.

3.    Hazard identification
Contact with product may cause burns to skin eyes and gastrointestinal tract. Mist is an irritant to
the respiratory tract. Fluid build up on the lung (pulmonary oedema) may occur up to 48 hours
after exposure and could prove fatal.

4.    First Aid Measures
After inhalation:                              Remove victim from further exposure keep warm and at
                                               rest. Obtain medical attention.
                                               Professional Medical Assistance: Following severe
                                               exposure the patient should be kept under medical
                                               review for at least 48 hours as delayed pulmonary
                                               oedema may develop.
After skin contact:                            Remove contaminated clothing. Wash skin with soap
                                               and water. Obtain medical attention.

After eye contact:                             Immediately irrigate with clean water, holding the
                                               eyelids apart, for at least 20 minutes.
                                               Obtain medical help after first aid has been initiated
                                               and completed.

After swallowing:                              Wash out mouth with water and give 200 –300 ml (half
                                               a pint) of water to drink).

Suitable extinguishing media:                 Non combustible. Requirements should be determined
                                              by surrounding materials. Above 171°C toxic oxides of
                                              phosphorous fumes and fluoride are emitted.

6.   Accidental Release Measures
Person related precautionary                  As a minimum requirement use acid resistant gloves

Procedure for cleaning/absorption:            Contain the spill with soil or lime as soon as possible.
                                              Clean up all contaminated areas with lime, soda ash,
                                              soil or adsorbent material and remove the
                                              contaminated soil. Restore the area to the original
                                              condition as soon as possible.
                                              Then pump or shovel slurry/water/solids into well-
                                              labelled containers for disposal. Add lime or soda ash
                                              with extreme care. Each kg acid will require approx.
                                              1.27kg soda ash or 1.16kg hydrated lime to
                                              neutralise.

Environmental protection measures:            Prevent the product and contaminated areas to come in
                                              contact with surface & groundwater.
                                              Do not use water to wash surfaces unless the surface is
                                              impermeable and a facility is available for recovering
                                              and removing the contaminated wash liquor.
Additional notes:                             Neutralization and/or absorption to prepare a solid state
                                              and removal thereof are recommended. Solid waste
                                              should be returned to the supplier or disposed on an
                                              appropriate waste disposal site.

12.   Ecological information
Biological degradation:                    The product gradually reacts with alkaline minerals to
                                           form soluble and insoluble phosphates, which are
                                           readily absorbed as a source of phosphate by plants
                                           and micro biota. Insoluble phosphates may persist
                                           indefinitely.

Behaviour in environmental                 Aquatic Fate: While acidity may be reduced readily by
compartments                               natural water hardness minerals, the phosphate may
                                           persist indefinitely.

                                           When spilled onto soil, phosphoric acid will infiltrate
                                           downward, the rate being greater with lower
                                           concentration because of reduced viscosity.
