Type of Home
The village has been open for 23 years. There are 176 units in the village –
single up to 3-bed places are available. There is also a frail and mid care section
called the clinic. The clinic has 13 mid care and 26 frail care beds. Initially only
residents of the village were allowed to move into the clinic. That has since
changed and ‘outsiders’ are now welcome. Golden Harvest has an open policy
so care should be taken with residents who wander. This facility would
therefore be ideal for those with more advanced dementia. The village will also
take people needing post-op or respite care. There are plans to make the home
more dementia-friendly – having a separate lounge for people with dementia,
for instance, so there is less disruption to other residents. Golden Harvest
receives no funding and uses the residents’ fees to subsidise the clinic.

Type of accommodation
In the clinic there is accommodation in 3-bed, 2-bed and single rooms for
anyone needing frail care, including those with dementia.

20 of the clinic staff have been trained by Alzheimer’s South Africa to care for
people with dementia. The staff-to-resident ratio is around 1:6 at the moment.
There is a total staff complement of 33, including professional nurses, enrolled
nursing assistants (ENA) and care givers.

Clinic costs range from R9000 to R11500 for an en suite room. Village
residents pay a lower rate.
Respite care is R400 per day.

Overall impression
Golden Harvest 2 is a large residential facility and the clinic is a friendly,
informal place. Visits by relatives are encouraged except at meal times, and they
are building a relatives lounge. The restaurant is open to anyone and is a good
meeting place for families. It is hoped that there will soon be a closed area for
people with dementia but at present photographs of potential wanderers are kept
at security. The family is encouraged to bring personal items for the resident’s
room and the rooms are cosy and spacious. Other than the problem with
residents who wander, the facilities for people with Alzheimer’s and other
dementias are excellent.
