First generation biotechnology involves the use of selected biological organisms to produce food
and drink. Second generation biotechnology is the use of pure cell or tissue culture to yield new
products - a characteristic of this generation is that mutagenesis and the selection of strains and
cultivars are used to improve metabolite and crop yields. Third generation is associated with
recombinant DNA technology. Industrial applications can be found in pharmaceuticals, speciality
chemicals, bioremediation and cleaner production methods.

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) and xxx are the consortium members who will
drive this project forward. NMMU will undertake the bulk of the technical work, xxx


A Steering Committee composed of the lead investigators from NMMU and xxx will take overall
responsibility for the project. The Project Manager will report to the Steering Committee. Financial
management of the funds will be the responsibility of the Steering Committee. The Finance Office,
Research Support Office and Technology Transfer Office at NMMU will assist the project manager

and Steering Committee with financial control, day-to-day project management, collation of reports
and IP management.


The Steering committee will meet formally at least 4 times per year. Monthly technical project
meetings will be held.

Describe the technology/ infrastructure available to do the project and which technology is not
available, but which is essential for delivery. Also indicate where this is situated e.g. LIFElab

Project funding will be allocated to a portfolio of early, middle and late-stage projects for a limited
period (3 years). ALL COSTS MUST BE VAT INCLUSIVE. Please note that, should the project be
accepted, a comprehensive business plan with full projected financials will be required.
