Setting up the Xbox 360
With the release of the Xbox 360, Microsoft created a
game machine with the capability of outputting 720p
and 1080i resolution material to HD-capable displays
such as the Panasonic TH-50PHD8UK Professional
Series HD Plasma Display via component analog HD
cabling.

The required cable needed for HD connectivity is the
Microsoft Xbox 360 Component HD AV Cable. This
cable comes standard in the full Xbox 360 system. This cable DOES NOT come standard in
the Xbox 360 Core System.

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/x/xbox360componenthdcable

This cable provides the following:

 •

   High-definition gaming output of 720p or 1080i

 •

   Progressive-scan DVD playback in 480p

 •

Dolby® Digital 5.1 Surround Sound output

 •

Component (Y, Pr, Pb) high-definition video out-
           put

 •

Composite cable for standard TV output

 •

   Eight-foot-long shielded cable.

With this cable, we are mainly concerned with the YPrPb video outputs and the Dolby op-
tical audio output. We will be connecting the video to the Kona card and the optical cable
directly to the Power Mac.

Setting up the AJA Kona LHe
AJA’s Kona LHe card will be used to capture the video into Final Cut Pro or another suit-
able application for video capture such as Gallery’s Virtual VTR.

Available at $1790, Kona LHe is a PCI Express based card that fits into PCI Express Macs
such as the Power Mac G5 Quad.

http://www.aja.com/html/products_macintosh_kona_LHe.html

For older systems that use PCI-X architecture, the Kona LH card will work fine and instruc-
tions in this manual are generally interchangeable between the two cards.

It is important that you fit the right card to the correct machine. There are a generation of
Power Mac G5’s that are not equipped with either PCI-X or PCI Express slots and are not
compatible with Kona LH or LHe.

Additionally, the Kona LHe has a breakout box, the KL-Box. This $290 device provides
rackmount convenience to your capture implementation along with a single cable connec-
tion between the KL-Box and Kona LHe card. If you anticipate connecting and disconnect-
ing the Xbox 360 frequently, I highly recommend this box.

The rest of this paper assumes you have installed the appropriate Kona card and have in-
stalled the latest drivers.

                                                                                   Note--you will need
                                                                                   three RCA to BNC
                                                                                   adapters.

The audio will be routed from the optical port on
the Xbox 360 HD cable. Plug in an optical cable on
the Xbox 360 port and connect the other end into
                                        the G5’s optical input.

When this connection is complete, you are done
connecting the Xbox 360 to the Kona LHe and
                                        Power Mac.

One item to note--make sure the Xbox 360 cable is
set to HD mode and set up the display for 720p in
the Xbox 360 system settings. Its easiest to do this
while the Xbox 360 signal is being passed-through
the KL-Box to an NTSC monitor that is HD ready.
Doing this without the benefit of an external moni-
tor may lead to a resolution change that requires
changes at the Kona Control Panel in order to view.

If you want to connect an additional monitor via SDI, you can use an AJA HDP which con-
verts SDI to DVI. Below, we have this setup to monitor using a 23” Apple Cinema Display.
