1. Welcome & Apologies
F.Simes welcomed everyone to the Pike History Committee meeting


2. Terms of Reference
The History Management Committee Terms of Reference were explained: -
Meet bi-monthly with the author
The duties include
    Advising additional sources of information
    Approving or arranging approval of the outline, the first & any subsequent drafts &
      final draft at appropriate intervals
    Discussing timetable
    Overseeing publication / web layout
    To select, collate & place photos in text


3. Overview/Update from Author of History Project
Elizabeth Nicholls advised that
     she has 70 files and that this number is increasing.
     She has approx. 25 diagrams & pastoral maps most are pre 1900
The proposed timetable has been agreed to by the Author & the PIP Coordinator is as
follows:

4. Committee Members Report/Updates
Report on information collected since last meeting (as per terms of reference – advise
additional sources of information)
    K.HILL – has received information from G&L Rothe along with some more photos
       (including a photo of a picture Lorraine painted in 1986)
           o Went out with Denis, Janyce & Mark Frahn & took photos of old equipment
              used in the Pike area. Noted M.Frahn’s property is 13km from Pike River so
              they would have carted water this distance to the property
           o Information from Jim Huckstep (related to Antony family)
           o Simarloo history – still trying to follow up some leads (Note Pat Marshall spoke
              to Mrs. Sims who advised her that a lot of the old photos have been destroyed)
           o Any history pre Sims ownership of Simarloo needs to be followed up
           o Noel Sims eulogy – Kaylene Letton has a copy of this
AP1.1 Simarloo history – follow up pre Sims ownership
       Noel Sims eulogy – K.Letton to provide a copy to K.Hill to type up & then ask Leroy
       permission for this to be used for book
       F.Simes to follow up with L.Sims possible workshop at Simarloo to gather history

     T.BEDIAVAS – Has photos of Shearer’s Dozer 1970’s pushing out trees in Pike area
         o Has photos of Queen Mary – used to cross creek during 1975/75 floods
         o Has chain saw photos
         o Will take photos of channel excavation
         o Noted that clearing photos are required
AP1.2 To provide photos to K.Hill to copy with captions

     P.MARSHALL – Will take photos of Field Marschall tractor, old crutching shed, wood
      cutters camp, old car (used as a pump)
AP1.3 To provide photos to K.Hill to copy with captions

     PAT MARSCHALL- still investigating asparagus (Brookburn). Some information can be
      found in the Lyrup book.
          o Betty Lloyd may have some information on Brookburn & info may also be in
             one of Peg Mortimer’s books

    K.LETTON – Will look for photos of 1972/74/75 floods

     J.LETTON – Patty Hogg skipper Paddle steamer – he is still following up
          o 1952 – he saw The Hero (paddle boat) in the Pike River – it took advantage of
             the high river
          o Has more photos to go through
          o Will take photo of elevator used to bale hay
          o Will take photos of new chook shed & existing chook shed

     D.FRAHN – Wheat stacks in 1930’s – there is a photo in a Murray Pioneer of Denis’
      brother
         o Water usage discussed
         o Wheat stacks discussed
         o Has his dads cash books from 1906
         o Has some photos of machinery

     J.FRAHN – Has found some negatives & will give these to Kathy with notes

5. Determine future items for History Committee
Committee agreed to try & find an event/s to help promote the History publication

AP1.9 Note any event that could assist promotion of the history publication to enable this
event to be piggybacked on by the PIP History Committee


6.    Any other Business
6.1   History of the Gol Gol Wetlands
A copy of the History of the Gol Gol Wetlands has been given to the PIP Coordinator from
the NSW Murray Wetlands Working Group and this was shown to the History Committee for
information.

6.2      Tour of Pike Area
Lorraine Rothe has asked that the committee consider arranging a trip/tour of the Pike area
i.e. sites mentioned in the book such as the old school sites.
The committee agreed that this should be a future action

6.3    Publication Grant – History Trust of SA
An application has been submitted through the Renmark to the Border LAP for a $3,000
grant toward the book publication. This application may not be supported by the History
Trust of SA as they would like a chapter of the book provided with the funding application
and this is not available to be provided prior to the closing date of 29/8/08.
The PIP Coordinator will continue to look at funding options for the History publication
including the community grants through the Renmark Paringa Council.

6.5     Pike History Book Title
History Committee were asked to consider the Book Title and sub title
Possible options include: (NOTE sub title not lined up with book title the suggestions are
listed for future discussion only)

The committee would like the sub title to have dates in it i.e. the year the book commences
to the current date e.g. 1890 - 2008

7. Workshop
The aim of the workshop is to Select History Photos/sketches/clippings/maps for Book (as
per terms of reference – committee to select, collate & place photos in text)
The committee worked through all photos at the meeting ensuring they all have a date
(year) and a caption.
The photos have been attached to butchers paper in decades to allow the committee to
determine next meeting, which photos they may decide to utilise in the book.
Gaps in photos during the decades were noted i.e. 1960’s did not have many photos to
choose from.
Denis & Janyce Frahn advised that Tony Hersy (cartoonist) was willing to draw some
cartoons for the book.

in the publication.
