Celebrating The Plan of Nashville 2009 Presented by The 2009 event promises to be the best ever! The day features a seminar with special guest, Suzanne Malec-McKenna, Commissioner of Chicago’s Department of Environment. Commissioner Malec-McKenna’s full biography is attached to this document. Immediately following the seminar will be a celebratory reception and announcement of the winners of the NCDC’s Visionary Award and the “Nashville 2054” Design Competition. The entire event will focus on sustainability and its relationship to civic design. Booth Space at Seminar and Reception Biography of Commissioner Suzanne Malec-McKenna Special Guest at “Celebrating The Plan of Nashville 2009” Suzanne Malec-McKenna serves as Commissioner of the Department of Environment for the City of Chicago. Suzanne was nominated by Mayor Daley for the position in August 2007, and has more than 19 years experience in environmental issues, including sustainable development and ecological preservation and restoration. Suzanne has served for nearly 16 years in the Department of Environment, most recently as Deputy Commissioner of Natural Resources and Water Quality. Prior to joining City government, she worked as an Urban Forestry Manager for Openlands Project. Suzanne has led key efforts for the Department, including Greencorps Chicago, the Chicago Center for Green Technology, the Calumet Initiative, the Chicago Conservation Corps and various water conservation and protection efforts. As Commissioner, she oversees Permitting and Enforcement, Energy and Sustainable Business, Brownfields Restoration, Natural Resources and Water Quality and Green Building promotion and analysis, as well as a green jobs initiative which is managed in cooperation with local non-profit, corporation and foundation partners. A major thrust of work which she oversees is the implementation of the Chicago Climate Action Plan, launched by Mayor Daley in 2008 with the goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 25% below 1990 levels by 2020. She serves on various boards and committees, including serving as a founding steering committee member of the Chicago Wilderness Coalition, a board member of NeighborSpace, a member of the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Institute for Environmental Science and Policy and Illinois Board of Natural Resource Sustainability. Suzanne has a bachelors of science degree from the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign and a masters of science degree in Managerial Communication from Northwestern University. She is currently seeking her Ph.D. from Northwestern in Communication Studies.
