Over recent years the Stirling Volunteer Centre has received growing interest in
volunteering overseas. In response to this we have produced this booklet as a starting point
to help you find an opportunity to suit you.

When planning your placement abroad, the following steps may be useful:-

Step 1 Research into the opportunities on offer, using books, the internet and
careers/volunteering advisers to help you (see sources of information below)

Step 2 Make contact with several agencies which seem to be of interest and gain
further information from them and from speaking to careers/volunteering
advisers. It may also be useful to speak to someone who has experience of
volunteering abroad. (See also www.workingabroad.com, which includes
       volunteer feedback stories).

Step 3 Decide on the opportunity which suits you best, making sure you know all that is
involved in terms of skill/age requirements, duration, accommodation, visas,
vaccinations, insurance, travel arrangements, UK training/briefing, funding
required, whether fundraising will be necessary, etc.

The process from initial contact with the agency of your choice to taking up a
placement can often take several months, so allow yourself time for this.

There a large number of agencies in Britain which place volunteers abroad on work
projects, both short and long term, and thorough research and advanced planning will help
to ensure that your placement abroad goes well.

Below are a list of useful books and internet websites, which will give you access to the
agencies which might be of interest to you.
The Volunteer Centre also has a resource library with up-to-date information on
opportunities and staff who can offer information and advice on the opportunity best
suited to your needs. Contact: The Volunteer Centre, 15 Friars Street, Stirling FK8 1HA,
Tel: (01786) 446071, email info@volunteerstirling.org.uk.
