TRAINING DOCUMENTATION: Web Services Set Up Process

This document outlines the process involved in setting up a weblog to accept text and
photo posts using email from a mobile phone.

The services identified to be used are FREE web-based services which collaborate in order to
facilitate the posting of information and images to a blog.

Definition
A weblog (usually shortened to blog, but occasionally spelled web log) is a web-based
publication consisting primarily of periodic articles (normally in reverse chronological order).
Although most early weblogs were manually updated, tools to automate the maintenance of
such sites made them accessible to a much larger population, and the use of some sort of
browser-based software is now a typical aspect of "blogging".

Web services identified
Blogger.com
This is one of, if not THE oldest blogging services on the Internet. It is now a secure and
stable environment for millions of bloggers around the world. This service also has the
credibility of being owned and hosted by Google. Users are required to register for an
account.

Flickr.com
One of the new generation of Web 2.0 products, allowing users to manage sets of their own
photos which they upload in a variety of ways. The uploaded photos are then available to
share with friends. This is a Beta service which is well developed and reliable. The service is a
project of Yahoo! and has received many accolades. For this reason, users will need a FREE
Yahoo account in order to use the service.

Although both of these services offer stand-alone, specific functionality, it is possible to get
them to synchronise in order to achieve the outcome we desire for the purpose of student
assessment.

The following image outlines the dataflow and relationship between the web-based services
we’re using for the project:
